About the Facility Fresno VA Medical Center This is the main campus of the Fresno VA Medical Center and provides a number of health services, including the following: addiction and substance abuse care, anesthesia, cardiology, critical care, dental/oral surgery, dermatology, emergency care, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, laboratory and pathology, mental health care, nephrology, neurology, ophthalmology, optometry, orthopedics, otolaryngology, PTSD care, palliative and hospice care, pharmacy, plastic and reconstructive surgery, podiatry, primary care, psychiatry, psychology, pulmonary medicine, radiology, rheumatology, surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, vascular surgery, and women veteran care. Responsibilities

• Shall be responsible for accurately identifying patients, obtaining the proper specimens, recognizing, and immediately reporting adverse patient reaction to venipuncture procedures to appropriate VA personnel.
• Shall be responsible for processing laboratory specimens as well as specimen pickup, delivery of blood and blood products and computer related functions such as accessioning specimens. Phlebotomist(s) shall refer problems/inquiries to VA team leaders or supervisors.
• Shall complete all Medical Center's required mandatory education and confirm all laboratory policies and procedures directly related to their job duties.
• Shall follow hospital and laboratory policies and procedures, including safety and computer policies.
• Must be familiar in dealing with hospital patient population, including drawing elderly and difficult patients.
• Must have tact and personality conducive to interacting with ill, disoriented, sometimes difficult inpatient and outpatient population.
• Shall be required to have basic typing and PC computer skills.

Requirements/Qualifications

• Must have a minimum of two (2) years of College with a biological science OR six (6) months of specialized experience performing phlebotomy procedures, and have a certification from an approved Phlebotomy Training Program by the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA).
• Must have and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification as approved by the American Heart Association (AHA).
