In this role you will get to work on the premier Infrastructure project in the US. Program background The Gateway Program is the most urgent infrastructure program in the country – a comprehensive set of rail investments that will improve commuter and intercity services, add needed resiliency and, in its later stages, create new capacity between Newark, New Jersey and New York City, the busiest section of the Northeast Corridor (NEC). The first phase of the Gateway Program includes the Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP), which includes the construction of a new two-track tunnel under the Hudson River connecting to Penn Station New York as well as the full rehabilitation of the existing 110-year-old North River Tunnel. The Gateway Development Commission (GDC), established through bi-state legislation, is responsible for the financing and development of the Hudson Tunnel Project. Position Summary The Senior Bridge Structural Engineer will provide technical leadership and expertise in the design, review, and construction oversight of bridge and structural elements for the Hudson Tunnel Project. This role is responsible for ensuring that all bridge-related activities meet project requirements, industry standards, and regulatory compliance, while supporting project management, coordination, and quality assurance. What You'll Be Doing: Structural Design & Review Lead the design and review of bridge and structural components, ensuring compliance with project specifications, design standards, and regulatory requirements. Advise on constructability, feasibility, value engineering, and sustainability for bridge structures. Review design documents, drawings, and specifications prepared by the Engineer of Record and contractors. Ensure integration of bridge designs with other project elements and packages. Construction Oversight & Field Support Provide technical support during construction, including oversight of bridge-related activities and resolution of field issues. Review contractor submittals, RFIs, and change orders related to bridge and structural work. Monitor progress against milestones and ensure timely completion of bridge construction activities. Quality Assurance & Testing Support implementation of quality management plans for bridge and structural works. Conduct quality audits and inspections to confirm compliance with project and industry standards. Verify contractor compliance with testing and inspection plans, and review results for accuracy and completeness. Maintain systematic records of all testing, inspection, and acceptance activities for bridge structures. Project Controls & Reporting Support schedule management and cost estimating for bridge-related activities. Contribute to risk management by identifying potential structural risks and recommending mitigation strategies. Prepare and present technical reports, progress updates, and documentation for bridge and structural work. Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement Collaborate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to resolve technical issues and ensure alignment across project packages. Participate in meetings, technical briefings, and coordination sessions related to bridge and structural engineering. Support interface management by integrating bridge activities with other project disciplines. Compliance & Safety Ensure all bridge and structural activities comply with federal, state, and local codes, standards, and permitting processes. Support implementation of safety management plans and procedures for bridge construction. Advise on safety improvements and incident mitigation related to bridge works. Qualifications: Education & Experience Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a related field. Professional Engineer (PE) license required. Minimum 10 years of experience in bridge and structural engineering, with significant experience on large-scale infrastructure or transportation projects. Experience with federally funded projects and regulatory compliance is preferred. Technical Skills Advanced knowledge of bridge design, analysis, and construction methods. Proficiency with structural engineering software and design tools. Experience with quality assurance, testing, and inspection processes for bridge structures. Project Management & Communication Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and stakeholder engagement. Compliance & Quality Understanding of relevant codes, standards, and permitting processes for bridge and structural works. Experience in change management, risk management, and dispute resolution.
