BECOME THE STORE MANAGER OF WOODLANDS IN KETCHIKAN, ALASKA! Position: Store Manager Status: Full-Time, Year-Round Location: Woodlands • Ketchikan, Alaska // 712 Water St., Ketchikan, Alaska 99901 Schedule: Flexible availability required, including some weekends and peak retail periods Compensation: Competitive and dependent on experience If you’re looking for a management position where you get to lead and build a team, work inside a local, homegrown, creative independent business, and actually have an impact on how the store operates and grows—we’d love to hear from you! DUTIES Our Store Manager is the person who keeps the retail side of Woodlands operating smoothly, and works out any random problems, quickly. You’ll lead the day-to-day operation of the store, support and manage our retail team, maintain our merchandising standards, keep our inventory needs communicated between our in-house production team, solve problems before they become bigger problems, and make sure customers consistently walk into a store that feels unmistakably Woodlands . This is a hands-on management position. We’re not looking for someone who wants to manage retail from the back office. You could be jumping in on the floor when it's needed, you could be re-merchandizing, coaching, organizing, making decisions, sharing the weight of the marketing, and more. It's your responsibility to notice the little things and ensure all our team members and customers have an amazing experience and can get what they need when they need it. Leading, coaching, and supporting the retail team Creating a positive, accountable, high-performing work environment Scheduling and helping maintain appropriate staffing levels Training new employees and continuing to develop existing staff skillsets, and playing to their strengths. Maintaining excellent customer service and stepping up when shortages or issues arise Opening and closing procedures and daily store operations, ensuring all are done to SOP and effeciently. Cash handling, register accountability, deposits, and POS procedures Receiving freight, organizing inventory, restocking, and maintaining accurate inventory Keeping the sales floor full, clean, organized, and visually strong Visual merchandising and maintaining the Woodlands brand throughout the store Communicating inventory needs from all sides, including alaskan made goods, and to in-house production, low-stock products, customer requests, online orders, and sales trends Helping identify what’s selling, what isn’t, and where opportunities exist Delegating effectively and following through to make sure things get done Maintaining store policies, expectations, and operational standards Communicating clearly with ownership and the rest of the Woodlands team Being willing to jump into whatever needs to happen that day and occasional errands. You’re organized enough to keep track of the big picture without losing the details. You know how to delegate instead of trying to do everything yourself. You communicate clearly—even when the conversation is uncomfortable. You can handle a very busy retail environment, but also know how to keep a team busy when we have a slow environment. You understand that great customer service doesn’t mean being scripted or overly sales-y. It means being genuinely helpful, knowing the products, reading the room, and making people feel welcome and confident in their purchases from a small, local grown, artist based, woman-owned small business. And most importantly, you take pride in your work, and have a deep understanding that how they operate and present themselves is how they represent the artist and ownership. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR Previous retail, management, supervisory, hospitality, or comparable leadership experience is strongly preferred. You should be comfortable with technology and modern POS systems, handling cash, working with inventory, leading employees, solving customer-service issues, and working independently. Because Ketchikan has a rhythm of its own, this position also requires flexibility. Summers can be fast and busy, and winter can be slow. Despite that, we work hard to stay open all year (minus a mandatory mental health break in January.) We need a manager who understands how to shift gears with the business and is available for a schedule that may include some weekends during our busiest retail periods. ABOUT WOODLANDS Woodlands started small—really small— and at the absolutely worst time. Founded in 2019 by Spring Barry, a born and raised Ketchikan, Local, she expanded into a physical retail footprint (based on demand), right before Covid-19 shut down the entire world. She managed to keep the business surviving despite little-to-no customers for 2 1/2 years after she started. Woodlands has grown because people connected with what we were making and what we were building. And we are excited to now be designing, building, and developing our second retail location and employee housing on Creek St., with our purchase of No. 1 Creek St. this spring. We believe there is something special about walking into a locally owned shop and knowing there are actual people behind it. An local artist is truly behind the artwork, her husband's hands behind the printing, a strong team behind the counter being what our customers remember about visiting us from all over, and being a business that lives, works, hires, creates, and reinvests back into our own community right here in Ketchikan.
