Patient Care Technician - Surgical & Trauma Care Unit (3RC)

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians for the Surgical & Trauma Care Unit (3RC) within the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division. This is a 48-bed adult surgical unit focusing on the care of orthopedics, trauma, and spine patients. Our staff is full of motivated individuals that are passionate about the quality of care they provide. The Surgical & Trauma Care Unit team believes it is our responsibility to provide patient centered care that will enable our patients and their families to cope with the physiological and psychological aspects of their illness or injury. Unit staff provides care for patients who experience: trauma injuries, reconstructive joint surgery, osteosarcoma removal and reconstruction, spine surgery, hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery, amputations, sports injuries, and young adult hip preservation procedures.

We are looking for Patient Care Techs to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: independently obtaining and recording vital signs, carrying out medical asepsis, performing simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, performing special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge, assisting with patient admission, transfers, and discharges, directly providing for patients' personal hygiene and comfort, turning, positioning and ambulating patients, transporting patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies, feeding patients, serving drinking water and nourishments, and recording patients' intake, assisting patients with bedpans and urinals and recording output, participating in nursing care conferences, providing for patient comfort measures through social interactions, sharing responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit, assembling and maintaining equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse, cleaning areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment, and stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
