Assistant Director

Description The incumbent assists the Director in managing the daily operations of the Springdale Animal Shelter. Responsibilities include supporting the hiring and training of staff, providing daily direction and leadership, coordinating volunteer activities, overseeing animal intake and adoption processes, and ensuring the proper maintenance of shelter facilities. The incumbent must perform all duties accurately and responsibly to safeguard the health and safety of the community. Safety/Security Sensitive Designation: This position is classified as safety/security sensitive under the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment and is therefore subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Job Duties Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers; maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Directly supervises (8-15) non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems in collaboration with the Director. Develop programs and training in association with the Director to ensure all animals in the care of the animal shelter appropriately receive daily care, medical care, social interactions, training, enrichment, and exercise. Conduct meetings with staff to review procedures, discuss workplace issues, collaborate and share ideas to improve animal care, the customer experience, and the shelter in general. Provide and ensure high quality customer service is provided to the public, internal team, external departments, and community partners by all staff and volunteers. Represent the shelter in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Collaborate with community partners to develop relationships that will help expand opportunities for successful placement of shelter animals. Develop relationships in the Northwest Arkansas area that will provide low cost spay and neuter for community members. Supervise and assist with posting and updating information, photos, and videos of adoptable animals on adoption platforms in a timely and accurate manner. Prepare weekly deposits, time, and billing for City Clerk's office. Coordinate tours of the shelter, donation events, and adoption events both at the shelter and in the community. Oversee the management of shelter supplies (such as food, cleaning supplies, and various materials) to ensure efficient use. Assist in ensuring the shelter and equipment are properly maintained and that building and facilities present a clean, professional, and inviting appearance for the public. Actively recruit and supervise foster families for animals as the need arises. Assist with maintaining and updating animal care policies and procedures as needed. Seek out training opportunities for staff and administration. Perform other duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in related area; plus 4 years related experience and/or training, and 12 to 18 months related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Arkansas Driver’s License. Certified to perform euthanasia by the Arkansas State Animal Control Association. Must be proficient in the use of a personal computer, Microsoft Office Suite, standard office equipment, and social media platforms. Ability to utilize both internal and external resources to obtain information and data necessary to carry out routine assignments and special projects. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff. Must be able to present a pleasant and friendly professional demeanor. Considerable knowledge of modern policies and practices of public personnel administration and animal care. Must maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality when dealing with sensitive and confidential matters. Ability to multi-task and work independently with minimal supervision. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and written often under adverse conditions. Possess good judgment, good powers of observation and memory. Ability to learn and perform technical processes to ensure workflow within the department. Ability to learn and interpret a variety of city, county, state and federal laws.
