Position: Cafeteria Monitor

Middle School (3 hours - 10:15 am - 1:15 pm)

Reports to: Building Principal

Qualifications:

1. Possess a high school diploma

2. Ability to work with children.

3. Have Act 34, Act 151 and FBI clearances.

Qualification Requirements:

1. Monitors must be in the cafeteria prior to the students entering for each lunch period. Monitors should ensure that students are entering the cafeteria in an orderly fashion and free of books.

2. Students should proceed to the lunch line of their choice upon entering. The cafeteria students do not need to wait to be dismissed to a line. Monitors should watch the line so there is no pushing, line jumping or taking food without paying.

3. After the students are seated, monitors are encouraged to recognize and acknowledge appropriate student behavior. Being proactive and build a relationship with students and can help to reduce inappropriate behaviors.

4. If students misbehave, it is the monitors' responsibility to speak with that student about their behavior and try to redirect the student. If the behavior continues, the monitor has the option to assign that student to an individual seat in the cafeteria for the remainder of lunch and possibly for the next day or several days if the behavior warrants it. The cafeteria monitor may fill out a discipline referral if the behavior warrants the attention of the assistant principal.

5. Monitors should circulate throughout the cafeteria monitoring behaviors. Monitors are to instruct students that if they need to get something after they are seated, they should raise their hand to ask permission from a lunch monitor, (i.e., in need of a snack, napkin, condiments, restroom use, etc.). If a spill occurs, the monitor should notify the custodian.

6. Cafeteria monitors should keep a log of bathroom usage by students. Monitors are to set up a designated area for bathroom sign out. Only 2 boys and 2 girls are permitted out at the same time and they must use a pass.


7. As students finish their lunch, monitors will instruct the student at the table to throw away their trash and then return to be seated at the table. Students should dispose of trash in cans; and if they have an empty tray, return it to the cafeteria worker at the tray window.


8. During the last 5 minutes left in the lunch period, the cafeteria monitors should signal to the students it is "quiet time". The monitors may make any announcements that need to be made at this time. Each monitor dismisses tables as they inspect to ensure that all garbage is thrown away and tables are neat. If trash is still at the table, the cafeteria monitor should ask the students to clean it up.

9. Upon dismissal from the cafeteria, cafeteria monitors should ensure that no food or beverages are taken out of the cafeteria unless it is still sealed or placed in a lunch box.

10. Performs other duties as requested by the building principal as normally attributed to this position.

Terms of Employment : 180 days; salary is contractual.

Evaluation : Performance to be evaluated annually by the Assistant Principal/Principal
