Foothill College Mission Statement:

Embracing inclusivity and building strong communities, Foothill College serves diverse learners and equips its students with critical thinking skills to address complex societal challenges, to thrive in the global workforce, and to engage in a life of inquiry.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the direction of the Dean of Health Sciences and Horticulture, the primary role of the fulltime Veterinary Technology Instructor is to teach veterinary technology students on various subjects in lecture and laboratory settings. These veterinary technicians in training must learn both didactic and skills-based information, with an emphasis on critical thinking and clinical application of knowledge.

Responsibilities include teaching lecture and hands-on lab courses with live animals which may include but are not limited to anatomy and physiology, radiology, beginning and advanced nursing skills, anesthesia and surgery, pharmacology, emergency medicine, animal behavior, and other topics in domesticated and non-domesticated species. Refer to the course curriculum for a full list of courses and descriptions: .

The program emphasizes low stress handling and fear-free methods in all animals. The ability to bring real world experiences and techniques into the classroom is expected.

The program philosophy is one of collaboration among faculty to teach critical thinking skills in students using multiple modalities in teaching. The program has an animal colony including large and small animals, a clinical laboratory, surgical suite, and a radiology suite with digital x-ray, dental x-ray, and ultrasound. We are seeking a highly motivated and collaborative faculty member to join our team in delivering a hands-on, multidisciplinary educational experience for students. Our program focuses on teaching critical thinking skills through a variety of modalities, including lectures, clinical experiences, and practical laboratory work. We are committed to preparing students for success in the veterinary field by providing a comprehensive, real-world learning environment. [SC1]

The instructor is expected to transfer veterinary knowledge and clinical experience to the classroom and help students understand the underlying reasons for their training. The instructor works with faculty DVMs, RVTs and students to perform and participate in small animal surgery, anesthesia and dentistry and is interested in helping to develop the next generation of veterinary technicians.

An additional shared role of all full-time vet tech faculty is to oversee animal care for program animals including mice, cats, dogs, goats, and cows. This includes:
  1. Overseeing day to day husbandry of the program animals
  2. Receiving daily student communications (including some weekends and holidays) regarding animal wellbeing and responding with appropriate actions
  3. Participating in program specific committees and regulatory compliance (Advisory Board, IACUC, USDA, CVTEA, California VMB).
  4. Overseeing students' care of animals including routinely dropping in and giving immediate feedback on students' performances (weekly or more frequently), performing unannounced random evaluation of shifts, reviewing peer evaluations, grading students according to direct observation and peer evaluations, and overseeing student scheduling.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.
