Description: The RN renders collaborative nursing care via the defined department Method of Practice. The RN cares for a caseload of patients for an assigned shift. Care is in accordance with the medical staff practitioner's treatment plan. Nursing standards of care and practice must be followed. A commitment to promoting the health potential of the patient (body, mind, spirit) is essential. The RN implements the nursing process effectively. Demonstrates the ability to delegate appropriately and direct staff in the coordination and delivery of care. Assumes responsibility for the appropriate utilization of care resources. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with others in problem resolution. Sensitivity to the needs of patients, families, and fellow employees is required. The RN reports directly to the Perinatal Nurse Manager. Indirect reporting is to the House Supervisor and other management covering the department. Collaboration with all members of the health care team in the coordination of patient care is essential. Delegates and directs an assigned caseload team which may include LVNs and Department Clerks. This position involves exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. The RN interprets the appropriate life span needs of patients. Provides appropriate population-based care according to department skills checklist for identified populations. Neonate: Birth to 27 days of age. Pediatric: 28 days of age to 13th birthday. Adult: 13 years of age to 65 years of age. Geriatric: 65 years of age and above. Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of patients is required. The ability to assess data reflective of the patient's life span is essential.
