Certified Ophthalmic Technician

Location: Brooklyn, NY 11012
Shift: Day Shift
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
Hours: 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Certified Ophthalmic Technician to perform preliminary ophthalmic screening and diagnostic testing for physician review. The technician will conduct routine eye-related examinations, prepare patients for examinations and treatments, maintain ophthalmic equipment, and assist physicians with minor procedures, laser treatments, and surgical activities.

The ideal candidate will have strong patient-care skills, attention to detail, technical proficiency, and the ability to work effectively in a busy ophthalmology environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform preliminary ophthalmic screening examinations and diagnostic tests for physician review.
• Conduct central and peripheral visual field testing, ocular motility testing, color vision testing, pharmacological pupil testing, and other ophthalmic assessments.
• Perform tonometry, tonography, and tension tonography testing to assist in determining intraocular pressure.
• Assess pupils for size, equality, and reaction prior to dilation.
• Direct and coordinate patient flow for ophthalmology physicians.
• Obtain and accurately document medical and personal information for patient charts.
• Screen patients for conditions and concerns within the scope of the technician's responsibilities.
• Arrange laboratory testing, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies, patient admissions, and surgical procedures as directed by physicians.
• Explain diagnostic procedures and treatment methods to patients and families in a clear and reassuring manner.
• Calibrate, operate, clean, and maintain ophthalmic equipment, including:
  • Biomicroscopes
  • Lensometers
  • Keratometers
  • Tangent screens
  • Slit lamps
  • Tonometers
• Clean and stock consultation rooms and clinical/laboratory areas with medications, supplies, and other necessary materials.
• Sterilize and prepare instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures.
• Assist physicians with minor office surgeries, laser treatments, and operating room procedures as required.
• Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation.
• Follow established clinical, safety, infection-control, and patient-care procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician .
• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of appropriate Ophthalmic Technician or Medical Assistant certificate training .
• Strong patient-service and interpersonal communication skills.
• Knowledge of routine ophthalmic procedures, diagnostic testing, and clinical applications.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and healthcare professionals.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established clinical procedures.
• Ability to operate, calibrate, and maintain ophthalmic diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ophthalmic Technician certification .
• Certified Ophthalmic Technician credential.
