Design Engineer – Energy Infrastructure | Civil Engineering - Rochester, NY

Rochester, NY is home to Fisher's headquarters and a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting utility, infrastructure, and energy projects. The region provides a strong market for civil engineers with experience in site development, stormwater, utility coordination, and permitting who want to apply their skills to the growing energy sector. 

As a Design Engineer on Fisher's Energy Group, you'll support civil engineering design for solar, wind, electric and gas utilities, pipelines, and power systems. You'll work across site design, stormwater, utility coordination, environmental permitting, and construction while collaborating with clients, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary project teams. 

You'll have the opportunity to build deeper expertise in energy infrastructure while taking ownership of technical design work. Through mentorship and varied project experience, you'll continue developing your civil engineering skills while contributing to projects with visible community and infrastructure impact.

What You'll Do

• Design site layouts, grading, utilities, drainage, stormwater, and erosion control solutions.
• Develop plans, calculations, estimates, reports, and construction documents.
• Support stormwater and environmental permitting initiatives and ensure designs comply with state and local regulations, safety codes, and industry standards.
• Lead environmental assessments and permitting efforts while collaborating with clients and regulatory agencies to secure approvals.
• Support electric, gas, and telecom utility design and Environmental Management & Construction Plans (EM&CP).
• Oversee construction progress to ensure work follows plans and safety standards.
• Participate in project planning, coordinate engineering tasks with scope, schedule, and budget, and maintain accurate project records.
• Prepare proposals and cost estimates for renewable energy, oil & gas, and utility projects while supporting internal teams with documentation, coordination, and presentations.

Requirements:

What We're Looking For

• B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• 5–10 years of civil engineering experience in energy, utilities, or land development.
• EIT required; PE preferred.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office.
• Experience with National Grid, National Fuel Gas, or other utility projects.

• Proven ability to deliver quality work through critical thinking, problem-solving, and sound judgment.
• Ability to own projects, prioritize effectively, and meet deliverables and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with MicroStation.
• Experience with local zoning and planning reviews, DOT permitting, NYS SEQR, and the ORES permitting process.
• Experience with stormwater design, calculations, and permitting.
• Experience with electric, gas, or telecom utility design.
• Experience with environmental permitting and EM&CP development.

Compensation + Benefits

Salary range: $83,000-$98,000

• Competitive compensation; actual pay varies based on experience, qualifications, education, and other factors and excludes the value of benefits.

This role is aligned to the Rochester, NY market for energy infrastructure, utility design, renewable energy, civil site design, and permitting. Fisher may also consider strong candidates located near Canonsburg, PA; Buffalo, NY; Syracuse, NY; Binghamton, NY; Ithaca, NY; Albany, NY; and Sugar Land, TX based on project needs, client alignment, team growth priorities, and business development opportunity.
