Job Summary We are hiring a heavy‑duty mechanic (career service position) in the Solid Waste Division. The role focuses on repairing and maintaining light and heavy‑duty trucks, construction equipment, and related machinery used daily in landfill and transfer station operations. About the Role HD mechanics diagnose and repair all vehicles and equipment, conduct daily inspections, and perform necessary adjustments and replacements to keep operations running smoothly. Typical projects include adjusting compactor lid wipers, replacing hydraulic hoses, and repairing chassis components. Job Duties Diagnose and repair gas, diesel, electric, and hybrid‑powered vehicles and equipment, including light and heavy‑duty trucks, backhoes, dozers, street sweepers, loaders, and refuse trailers. Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and replace ignition systems, fuel systems, lighting systems, electrical/computer control systems, and ABS brake systems. Maintain and document service, maintenance, repair records, and work orders. Provide technical assistance, resolve problems, and advise on complex or unusual projects. Read and interpret manuals, electrical schematics, and illustrated parts diagrams. Use a Windows‑based computer program for tracking all work performed and retrieving information about work to be performed. Qualifications A minimum of four (4) years of experience as a journeyman mechanic in heavy‑duty diesel vehicles and construction equipment (medium and light‑duty automotive maintenance optional). Or two (2) years of experience as a journeyman mechanic in heavy‑duty diesel vehicles and construction equipment or automotive repair and maintenance, plus completion of a two‑year vocational, military, community college diesel‑automotive mechanics program or an accredited, state‑approved apprenticeship program. Or any equivalent combination of education and experience that enables the applicant to perform the work of the position. Experience and knowledge of safe workplace practices. Work Schedule: Multiple schedules: Mon‑Fri 06:00‑14:30, Mon‑Fri 14:30‑23:00, Sun‑Wed 06:00‑16:30, Wed‑Sat 06:00‑16:30. Physical Requirements and Environment Must stand for long periods, bend, stoop, crouch, and adopt awkward positions; some lifting may be required.
