Job Description

This role serves as a Group Leader in Production for a UAW facility in a fast-paced, high-volume automotive manufacturing facility. The Production Supervisor leads hourly teams, oversees daily manufacturing operations, and ensures that safety, quality, productivity, and cost targets are consistently achieved. This position requires strong leadership, hands-on involvement on the shop floor, and the ability to manage change and ambiguity while driving continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage daily manufacturing operations for engine assembly and machining, adjusting production plans as needed to meet demand.
• Drive performance in safety, quality, productivity, cost, and delivery with a strong focus on SPQRCE metrics.
• Oversee production activities, including quality inspections, problem-solving, and built-in quality initiatives to ensure engines meet all specifications.
• Train, develop, and evaluate hourly team members, ensuring they have the skills and support needed to perform effectively.
• Build and sustain high-performing teams by fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Motivate employees through standardized work methods and clear performance expectations.
• Ensure team members receive thorough Job Instruction Training (JIT) and understand all relevant procedures and standards.
• Coach, counsel, and mentor other Group Leaders to strengthen leadership capabilities across the operation.
• Lead and support Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) processes or similar operating systems to standardize and improve operations.
• Serve as a resource for launch and pilot production activities, supporting new products and processes as they are introduced.
• Meet or exceed production schedules, cost targets, and quality requirements by effectively planning and coordinating resources.
• Apply lean and synchronous manufacturing principles to reduce waste, improve flow, and increase efficiency.
• Implement systems and corrective actions that prevent recurrence of known issues and drive sustainable improvements.
• Maintain awareness of quality standards and expectations, ensuring all processes consistently meet required quality levels.
• Understand and consistently administer National and Local UAW Agreements in a fair and compliant manner.
• Maintain a respectful, compliant work environment that supports positive labor relations.
• Promote and enforce safe work practices, including ergonomics and housekeeping, to maintain a safe workplace.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area aligned with safety and 5S principles.
• Ensure effective use of personnel, materials, and equipment to optimize productivity and minimize waste.
• Support continuous improvement in material flow and supply chain efficiency, collaborating closely with materials and logistics teams.
• Troubleshoot operational issues in real time and implement corrective actions to prevent delays or quality concerns.
• Use basic computer tools such as email and word processing to communicate, document issues, and track performance.
• Work rotating shifts and weekends as needed to support a 24/7 operation, including significant overtime and pre-shift preparation.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience leading teams in a manufacturing, production, or supply chain environment, managing approximately 20 or more people with at least 2+ years of leadership experience.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, train, develop, and evaluate hourly employees in a high-volume manufacturing setting.
• Experience working in a unionized environment, ideally with UAW-represented employees, and leading union teams.
• Strong working knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and variation reduction techniques.
• Proven experience meeting production schedules, cost targets, and quality requirements in a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to promote and enforce safe work practices, including safety, ergonomics, and housekeeping standards.
• Basic computer skills, including email, word processing, and typing for communication and documentation.
• Willingness and ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and significant overtime as required in a 24/7 operation.
• Strong leadership, supervision, and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to drive accountability and performance.
• Experience in supervision, leadership development, project scheduling, process improvement, quality control, and safety management.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree is highly preferred and may be required for direct-hire opportunities.
• Experience in automotive manufacturing or high-volume production environments.
• Familiarity with Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) or similar structured operating systems.
• Prior experience supporting launch or pilot production activities for new products or processes.
• Experience with built-in quality initiatives and methodologies such as DFSS or Red X certification.
• Knowledge of timekeeping systems and workforce management tools.
• Strong background in materials or supply chain leadership, including coordination with production and logistics.
• Ability to interpret and apply collective bargaining agreements in a consistent and fair manner.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-volume, precision manufacturing environment with frequent change and ambiguity.

This is a Contract position based out of Flint, MI.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $50.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
