Contract Power Electronics Engineer — Spacecraft Power Systems

6-month contract - 40 hours per week

Fully remote (US-based)

A space & defense company is hiring a Power Electronics Engineer to own board-level power design through a 6-month contract engagement. The hardware is power electronics for spaceflight systems, built to man-rated standard.

The architecture is set, the program is moving. What's needed is a design owner who has taken flight power electronics from schematic through qualification before, can pick up a live design without a long runway, and can carry it from capture through validation on a fixed clock.

What you'll be doing

\n
• Take full ownership of a power board from requirements and architecture through to a qualified, flight-ready unit
\n
• Design and simulate circuits across DC-DC conversion, solid-state switching, fault protection and current limiting
\n
• Produce schematics and lay out multi-layer PCBs, working closely with mechanical on enclosure and packaging
\n
• Bring up your own hardware on the bench and prove it out against spec
\n
• Plan and run the qual campaign — vibe, shock, thermal cycling and vacuum testing
\n
• Lead FMEA work and build the reliability case for your designs at system level
\n

✅ What you'll need

\n
• A degree in electrical engineering
\n
• Solid hands-on background designing and delivering power electronics hardware
\n
• Comfortable owning schematic and layout yourself, not just reviewing someone else's
\n
• Circuit design depth in conversion, switching, protection and conditioning
\n
• Bench skills — simulation tools, scopes, DAQ and test instrumentation
\n
• Familiar with common embedded comms buses and serial interfaces
\n
• Can script or code when the job needs it (Matlab, Python, C)
\n
• Happy making calls with partial information and defending the reasoning
\n
• Clear communicator, in writing and in the room
\n
• US-based and eligible to work on ITAR-controlled programs
\n

• Hardware you've designed has flown, or been through environmental qual for flight
\n
• Experience taking a product from concept through production
\n
• Data logging and SQL
\n
• Formula SAE or similar student engineering team background
\n
• Prior contract or independent consulting work, you land and add value fast
\n
