About the Role
A leading national retailer — recognized for its design-forward brand, community investment, and commitment to team member growth — is seeking a contract Art Director / Designer to join its Enterprise Communications team. This role is being filled through our staffing firm on behalf of the client.
This is not an advertising role. Instead, it centers on storytelling across owned communications channels, creating strategic, conceptual design work that engages internal teams, external audiences, and the communities the brand serves. The Art Director/Designer will help bring to life stories that highlight investments in training, career growth, and long-standing community commitments. Job Description
The Art Director/Designer is responsible for creating compelling, audience-specific creative that strengthens the brand's connection with its people and communities. This individual will collaborate closely with business strategists, content managers, and media relations partners to develop storytelling solutions across owned channels — including Instagram, the corporate website, internal newsletters, and more. Each channel's unique strategy, audience, and content format should inform the creative and design approach.
Working alongside the Creative Director, Design and Art Direction Associate Creative Director, Senior Art Director, and Project Manager, this role plays a key part in bringing each project's vision to life. Success requires active participation in strategy meetings, close collaboration with the creative team and cross-functional partners, and consistent, high-quality communication throughout.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated, works well with autonomy, and thrives in a fast-moving, collaborative environment. They bring strong situational awareness, professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to translate strategic direction into thoughtful, effective creative work.

As the Art Director/Designer, you will:
- Develop innovative concepts and creative strategies that achieve project objectives, engage audiences, and drive the creative vision forward
- Communicate and brainstorm with cross-functional teams
- Conceptualize and execute design and art direction for internal and external communications channels — including the corporate site, social media, and email — as well as create brand identities and style guides for special projects
- Engage in hands-on design, bringing new ideas, styles, and deep thinking into the work
- Prioritize continuous improvement to keep communications fresh and engaging
- Collaborate with business partners and other communications team members
- Work closely with producers and the broader team to plan photoshoots, including creating shot lists and participating in on-set photo shoot art direction as needed
- Tackle other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- Minimum 4 years of professional design experience
- Solid portfolio demonstrating breadth of design and related experience
- Proven experience designing for social media
- Strong digital, conceptual, production, and composition skills
- Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
- Demonstrated ability in art direction, brainstorming, and developing communication concepts
- Experience as a digital designer with strong digital layout skills
- Experience directing photography and photo shoots
- Proven ability creating social media creative informed by current social trends
- Ability to concept, develop, and execute multiple projects at once against tight deadlines
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, presentation, and communication skills
- Expert knowledge of Figma
- Graphic design and concept development expertise
- Experience collaborating with digital publishing teams on corporate site layouts, articles, and social content
- Background in digital design / UX
- Experience developing and maintaining branding systems
- Design management experience
- Strong layout skills across multiple formats and channels
