Stationary Engineer

Position Title Stationary Engineer Pay Status and Classification Non‑exempt, Regular full time Supervisor Cogeneration Plant Supervisor Essential Responsibilities and Duties Operations Assist startup, shutdown, and emergency procedures for plant systems including gas fired turbine, gas compressor, HRSG, gas fired boilers, absorption chiller, centrifugal chillers, and cooling tower. Perform water tests for boiler feed water and condensate treatment, and work with vendors to support cooling tower care and treatment. Monitor control room instrumentation and alarms to identify deficiencies and take corrective actions. Use the building management system (BMS) for performance monitoring and deficiency measures. Assist with building switchovers by draining AHU coils or filling units depending on season. Maintenance Perform preventive and corrective maintenance for plant equipment including boilers, chillers, HRSG, turbine, generators, cooling towers, and air compressors. Identify leaks, noise, and abnormal conditions and recommend or perform repairs. Periodically blow down centrifugal chillers during operations and maintain proper flow through barrels, including cleaning strainers. Maintain steam and chilled water manholes by checking groundwater pumps and operations. Work with vendors for services including the gas compressor, turbine, and chillers. Use the work order system (Works) to track and schedule maintenance. Repair Repair or replace condensate and sump pumps and perform alignments. Assist with repairs to campus steam traps. Perform proper lock‑out‑tag‑out when working on equipment. Assist vendors with repairs as needed for plant equipment. Working Conditions The work area includes Central Plant and all campus facilities. Position may require working varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holiday coverage; covering open shifts as needed. Maintain a safe work environment through job planning, housekeeping, and identifying corrective hazards. Comply with department and college policies and procedures. Qualifications Education Associate’s degree in plant utilities, electrical, or mechanical engineering. High school diploma. Relevant military training. Experience Three to five years’ experience as a boiler operator, nuclear operator, and/or stationary engineer. Experience operating high pressure steam boilers and distribution. Experience with central plant chiller systems and distributed chilled water. Experience with switching 13.2 kV and 480 V breakers through a load management system (LMS). Skills Good communication and interpersonal skills. Computer skills including Word, Excel, and Adobe. Knowledge of distributed control systems (DCS). Licenses Valid New York State driver’s license. Licensed as a stationary engineer, and/or Navy plant operator. Compensation The hourly range for this position is $27.00–$29.90 per hour. The wage or salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
