Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient and identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems. The RN develops and implements an individualized plan of care and evaluates the patient's response. The RN promotes safe passage for their patients by using knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment. They assist patients in transitioning through the healthcare encounter without preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to healthcare personnel based on the Nursing Practice Act, each patient's condition, and the competencies of the employee. This role encompasses RNs in both inpatient and outpatient departments with 24/7 staffing requirements. Essential functions include conducting accurate clinical assessments according to practice standards. RNs identify and prioritize patient and family needs while developing and evaluating the nursing plan of care. They administer evidence-based practice changes through research utilization and participate in quality/performance improvement initiatives. RNs create a compassionate, supportive, safe, and therapeutic environment for patients, families, and staff. They develop therapeutic relationships with patients and families and maintain appropriate boundaries. RNs recognize, appreciate, and incorporate unique differences into an individualized plan of care. They preserve and protect the confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights of patients and families. RNs create individualized plans that reflect patient and family values and goals. They facilitate learning for patients and families, nursing staff, and other members of the healthcare team. Collaboration with colleagues and the community is key in developing and implementing an integrated plan of care. They use strategies and available resources for problem-solving related to patient care. RNs demonstrate commitment to community service and ongoing professional growth through continuing education. They improve nursing practice and the work environment by participating in shared governance and decision-making processes. Knowledge of nursing and patient care standards and laws is essential. RNs must communicate effectively, possess critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and provide quality patient-centered care to all patients.
