Asst Group Leader G71

The Mechanical Engineering Group is seeking an Assistant Group Leader to lead the functional team and oversee the development of mechanical engineering solutions that enable advanced hardware prototypes. The Group works with programs across the Laboratory including spaceborne optical systems, high energy laser systems, airborne radio and optical systems, ground-based radio and optical telescopes, UAV/UAS systems, and undersea applications. The Group's contributions focus on the sub-disciplines of precision engineering, opto-mechanical systems, novel mechanisms, high-performance structures, custom electronics packaging, and detailed mechanical design. Candidates should have expertise in one or more of the sub-disciplines, demonstrated technical leadership, and be prepared to assume a leadership position on one or more major programs executed across the Laboratory.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1. Program management and leadership

• Lead the development and execution of programs in all phases of from concept through shipment and field testing.
• Assist with program planning, proposal briefings, statements of work, staffing and budget.

• Engage in outreach with Mission partners to seek new program opportunities and identify enabling technologies and capabilities.

 

2. Technical leadership

• Identify and implement advanced mechanical technologies and capabilities.
• Support the development and adoption of the Division’s Digital Enterprise Initiative.

• Work with the Fabrication Group to leverage cutting-edge capabilities for novel designs.
• Drive standard practices and continuous improvement within mechanical design and program execution processes.

 

3. Staff development

• Advance the careers of staff through mentoring and coaching, regular check-ins, career planning, goal setting, and participation in the annual staff performance evaluations and salary inputs.
• Identify high-quality staff candidates and participate in the interviewing and hiring process.

• Promote technical excellence through working groups, peer reviews, apprentice roles, and providing staff regular feedback on technical work, briefings, and reports.

 

4. Other responsibilities

• Participate in Group strategic planning and lead strategic initiatives
• Assist with Group office administrative activities including staff labor planning, budget planning, staff training and subcontractor oversight.
• Oversee the Group’s laboratories, equipment, and Engineering Prototyping Facility planning
• Participate in Division and/or Director’s Office-level initiatives and committees.

 

 

REQUIRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Technical degree in engineering or related degree and work experience. PhD or MS highly desirable.
2. Demonstrated technical excellence in mechanical engineering.
3. Demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary hardware development teams.
4. Minimum of 7 years of applicable experience.

 

 

 

Hiring Range: $215,000-$300,000
