NYSA Summer Photography Intern (Unpaid)

Job Overview Newcomer Youth Summer Academy 2026 Photography Intern (2 positions). Location: Manhattan (in‑person). Start Date: June 29, 2026. Duration: June 29 – August 21, 2026. The internship is part‑time (4‑15 hours/week) and reports to the Operations Coordinator, Youth Programs. Scope of Work The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six‑week program aimed at helping newly arrived refugee youth succeed in the New York City public school system. The photographer will create high‑quality stock photos for internal and external use, including newsletters, funder reports and the yearbook, and will work on‑site at the Academy. Responsibilities Photograph NYSA events, classes, student and staff portraits. Communicate regularly with IRC administrators, the Yearbook Coordinator and Graphic Designer. Provide images in easily downloadable files organized by date and event. Edit photo rolls and photos. Commit at least 50% of the top priority days/events, which include: Staff Training, First Day of School, in‑class and around‑school candid photographs, Wednesday mid‑day community events (e.g., Concert, International Food & Fashion Festival, Talent Show), Friday field trips, student & staff yearbook portraits, Graduation. Learning Objectives The intern will enhance skills to document clients of diverse backgrounds and ages. The intern will gain hands‑on experience with different types of photography (portraits, class‑setting, events, action shots). The intern will develop an understanding of photography ethics, especially when working with refugee and youth populations. Requirements Must be based in the US, be a US citizen or have US work authorization. Must be enrolled in a post‑secondary institution or have graduated within the last 2 years. At least two years of photographing experience. Strong organizational, communication and collaboration skills. Flexible and able to solve problems. High level of cultural competence. Fluency with photo editing programs. Experience working with diverse populations and youth is desirable. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team. Consent to photos being the property of IRC and not for use by the photographer without IRC’s permission.
