Summary

Shipfitters perform layout, fabrication, installation, and repair of structural components using blueprints, templates, and various tools, in a safe and efficient manner. Duties include fitting and tack welding decks, bulkheads, and shell structures, installing outfitting items, and heat straightening following technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to ensure accurate and compliant system installations. 1st Class Mechanics are expected to independently receive assignments, plan the work, identify material requirements, and execute tasks efficiently and accurately.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and always adhere to all OSHA safety standards and Tcnico safety policies.
• Must adhere to all applicable safety, technical, and regulatory guidelines, including but not limited to:
  • Company policies and procedures
  • Local, state, and federal regulations
  • ABS, NAVSEA Standard Items, and MSC GTRs
  • MIL-STD (e.g., 1689-A, 2035)
  • General Specifications for Overhaul of Ships
  • OSHA 2268
• Independently perform layout, rip out, modification, installation, replacement, and repair of structural components using blueprints, templates, and sketches.
• Aligning and fitting structural items, including plating, t-beam, structural doors, hatches, scuttles, and other structural outfitting items using necessary tools.
• Certified and proficient at tack welding various types of metal (e.g., steel, stainless steel, aluminum, HY steel)
• Fit-up and tack-weld various structural items (e.g., structural foundations, bulkhead/deck inserts)
• Install structural outfitting components including doors, ladders, scuttles and hatches.
• Use heating torches for plate straightening and shrinkage; apply proper sequencing for efficient assembly and fitting.
• Must have an advanced level of experience with the use of cutting torches, plasma cutters in removal and installation of plating, foundations and structural outfitting.
• Understanding and using a variety of portable and hand tools used in the trade. Also possess and maintain personal hand tools necessary to accomplish their trade.
• Read and interpret Chemist and Competent Person reports to ensure safe conditions for hot work.
• Conduct self-inspections to ensure work meets quality standards and complies with applicable drawings and specifications.
• Provide guidance and train junior craftsmen, providing direction as a senior mechanic when required.
• Maintain a good attendance record, demonstrate a positive and professional attitude, work well with others, take pride in your work, and be receptive to constructive feedback from mentors (supervisor, PMT, etc.).

Experience Requirements

• 4 - 6 years of experience as a Shipfitter in a shipyard.

Other Requirements

• Must be able to work in various environmental conditions including outdoor weather, heights, confined spaces, loud noise, and exposure to airborne particles or fumes.
• Must be able to wear a respirator as required for specific tasks and maintain compliance with fit testing and respiratory protection protocols.
• Regularly required to sit, reach, and use hands for handling or operating tools and equipment.
• Occasionally required to stoop, bend, squat, crawl, and climb ladders or structures (e.g., masts, tanks, voids).
• Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. independently and seek assistance for heavier loads.
• Must be able to pass Drug Screening, Work Ability Screening.
• Must be able to obtain a Government facility security pass and badges at the various shipyards Tcnico works at (e.g., MHI, BAE, NASSCO, HII).
• Availability to work overtime, weekends, or travel to alternate worksites when project needs demand.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
