Shipyard Shipfitter Improver (Minimum 2 Years Experience)
Job Type: Full-Time
Pay: $17-$19/hr Based on Experience

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Shipyard Shipfitter Improver with a minimum of 2 years of shipyard shipfitting experience to assist in the fabrication, fitting, alignment, and installation of structural steel components aboard U.S. Navy and commercial vessels. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced shipyard environment.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the layout, fabrication, fitting, and installation of structural steel components, bulkheads, foundations, and other shipboard assemblies.
• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and work packages.
• Measure, mark, and cut steel using hand tools, power tools, torches, and plasma cutting equipment.
• Fit and align structural members to engineering drawings and tolerances.
• Tack weld components as required (if qualified) prior to final welding.
• Operate grinders, magnetic drills, beveling machines, and other fabrication equipment.
• Install temporary bracing, strongbacks, and supports during fabrication and installation.
• Perform basic burning, fitting, and layout work under the direction of senior shipfitters or supervisors.
• Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with quality and shipyard standards.
• Maintain clean and organized work areas while following all housekeeping requirements.
• Work closely with welders, riggers, machinists, and other shipyard trades to complete projects safely and efficiently.
• Follow all OSHA, NAVSEA, and shipyard safety regulations.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of shipyard shipfitting experience required.
• Experience reading and interpreting shipbuilding blueprints and structural drawings.
• Ability to use tape measures, squares, levels, and precision measuring tools.
• Knowledge of shipboard structural fabrication and steel fitting techniques.
• Experience using oxy-fuel cutting torches and other fabrication equipment.
• Ability to safely work aboard vessels under construction, repair, or overhaul.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting U.S. Navy ship repair or new construction projects.
• OSHA 10 Maritime or OSHA 10 Construction certification.
• Experience with NAVSEA Standard Items.
• Tack welding experience (preferred but not required).
• Familiarity with shipyard quality control processes.
