LSC currently funds 129 independent legal aid offices nationwide. LSC's mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans. The Office of Program Performance (OPP) oversees LSC’s grantmaking and works with grantees to support high-quality legal services and effective program performance. Within OPP, the Pro Bono Innovation Fund (PBIF) supports innovative and effective approaches to expanding pro bono legal services. PBIF’s work includes grant administration, grantee support and technical assistance, program evaluation, research, and initiatives designed to strengthen and improve pro bono service delivery. The internships are based in Washington, DC, and will require working from an office in DC in accordance with LSC’s hybrid work model. The successful candidates must live in the DC metropolitan area for the duration of the internship. BASIC FUNCTION The primary objectives of this internship are for the intern to: Develop a practical understanding of grantmaking, grant administration, program evaluation, and technical assistance within civil legal aid; Strengthen research, data analysis, professional writing, and presentation skills through substantive PBIF projects; Build experience reviewing grant applications, progress reports, supporting materials, and program data to identify trends, successes, challenges, and lessons learned; Strengthen project management, time management, professional communication, and effective workplace behaviors while supporting multiple projects; Gain hands-on experience using PBIF’s grant management, data tracking, and collaboration tools and processes. The internship is expected to run from September through December 2026. Interns will work part-time, up to 20 hours per week during the fall. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The intern's principal duties and responsibilities include: Supporting PBIF grant administration and reporting activities, including preparing progress report and payment request materials, reviewing reports for completeness, compiling data, and helping track reporting requirements and deadlines. Assisting with grantee communications and progress report preparation by reviewing grant applications, reports, and supporting materials; preparing materials for calls; tracking follow-up items; and participating in grantee meetings as appropriate. Conducting research and analysis related to PBIF grants, including reviewing past Sustainability grants and other grantee data to identify program successes, challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities for improvement. Supporting PBIF program evaluation activities by organizing and preparing information for external evaluators, assisting with data collection and analysis, and supporting related communications and data transfers. Assisting with the development of curriculum, workshops, presentations, visualizations, internal reference tools, and other resources for PBIF initiatives, including the PBIF Incubation grantee class and PBIF Grantee Meeting. Supporting planning and preparation for PBIF meetings, trainings, and events, including researching topics, organizing materials, assisting with logistics, and preparing supporting resources. Reviewing, organizing, and updating grant-related data and records using systems such as GrantEase, Smartsheet, Microsoft Excel, and other OPP tools. Drafting and editing templates, checklists, correspondence, presentations, reports, and other materials that support PBIF grant administration and program improvement. Participating in PBIF team and stakeholder meetings, taking notes, tracking action items, and coordinating follow-up activities with PBIF staff. Assisting with other OPP and PBIF projects and duties as assigned. The ideal applicant must be: Organized and attentive to detail; Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; Strong in research, data analysis, written communication, and verbal communication; Comfortable reviewing detailed information, organizing data, and managing multiple assignments and deadlines; Able to work independently and collaboratively, ask thoughtful questions, and communicate professionally with team members and stakeholders; Intellectually curious and interested in learning about grantmaking, program evaluation, technical assistance, and civil legal aid; Committed to LSC's mission of promoting equal access to justice; Interest or background in law, public policy, nonprofit management, program evaluation, research, data analysis, grants administration, or related fields preferred; Bonus : Experience with Smartsheet, data visualization, data management, presentation development, or grant management systems.
