Head of Product, Systems

Head of Product, Systems Torus Salt Lake City, Utah, United States About this position About Torus Torus is headquartered in Utah and is expanding manufacturing at our 545,000-square-foot facility in Salt Lake City called GigaOne. We are the world’s first mesh energy infrastructure, uniting communities through resilient, sustainable, and intelligent power. We design, engineer, manufacture, install, and support our systems end-to-end, standing behind them throughout their lifecycle. Torus systems help reduce costs, lower emissions, and protect facilities from outages, while strengthening the security and reliability of the broader utility grid. Torus is committed to American manufacturing, engineering excellence, and building energy systems that last. Torus has raised over $267 million from investors like Magnetar, Mercado, ICONIQ and Origin Ventures. The investments are helping to accelerate deployment of modular power plants across utilities, data centers, and industrial sectors. This investor confidence reflects the strength of our team, technology as well as the scale of the problem we are solving. At Torus, you will be part of something larger than a single product or technology. Your work will help build energy infrastructure that supports and strengthens our electrical grid, critical systems, industry, and communities for decades to come. We value accountability, collaboration, and clear thinking. We are looking for people who want to solve hard problems and build things that matter. About the Role We believe most product organizations are built and managed to chase the wrong signals (confidence in delivery timelines 12+ months away, internal consensus, user engagement vanity metrics, etc.). We use Directed Discovery, which is a human‑centered, evidence-driven product methodology that prioritizes managing product-market‑fit above everything else. As Head of Product, Systems , this means you will be building and managing a product team and culture which focuses on ensuring our products and user experiences consistently produce these outcomes: Choosers quickly and easily recognize Torus’ value and purchase our products (likelihood to buy) Users feel like our product experiences are simultaneously powerful and simple (customer happiness) Repeat purchases/expansion of our product (length of stay) And most importantly, we need to produce these outcomes especially when product-market conditions change. This means you’ll partner as a peer to the Heads of Software, Embedded Systems, Data, and Testing Tools & Frameworks to ensure that our technology systems are successfully balancing “Speed and Quality Equally.” How We Build Building with Directed Discovery means a lot of things, but if you don’t deeply resonate with the below, you will not be a fit. Product leaders as critical Sales collaborators. Our products exist in a highly sophisticated ecosystem of building owners, utility operators, and regulatory environments. Managing product-market fit means finding the intersection between choosers’ likelihood to buy and users’ happiness as they interact with our products. We believe the only way to great clear chooser signals is being a powerful collaborator in the Sales process. This looks like delivering truly exceptional product demos and supporting the Sales team in overcoming buyer objections as deals are closing. Your own proposals get preference-tested like everyone else. Expect evidence to kill some of your ideas. If that sentence reads as relief, keep going. If you would rather run a roadmap on conviction and consensus, this will be a frustrating place to work. Work is routed, not “roadmapped”. Net-new work runs the full sequence; additions to existing experiences run lighter; operational work lighter still — and rigor scales with reversibility. Software iterates after release. Hardware must be right before tooling and certification. Speed and quality, equally, by design. Evidence breaks ties. The user breaks the tie on experience. The purchase order breaks the tie on viability. The instrument breaks the tie on performance. The whole team does discovery. Our engineers help build discussion guides, moderate interviews, and sit in preference tests. You will teach this craft, not gatekeep it. No sprints. Single-piece flow, mile markers, and an org we redesign as we learn. Leaders serve teams from the bottom of the structure; teams own implementation. Who You Are Relator: people feel heard by you before they feel directed by you. You seek context with intention, and you co‑create rather than dictate. Deal‑credible: you can defend payback economics to a CFO in the morning and observe a facilities operator using the product in the afternoon without leading the witness. You have closed or rescued revenue, and you can name exactly what changed in the product because of it. Falsifiable: you keep score on yourself. You can tell stories about public positions you held that evidence reversed — and you tell them with something close to relish. A strategist with strong tactical intuition: you own our product strategies, and ensure they are aligned with our company mission, vision, and strategy, but at the same time you instinctively build those strategies within our delivery constraints and challenges. An instrument builder: you design the systems that make decisions obvious rather than argued — win/loss programs, telemetry‑based confirmation metrics, discussion guides — where every question has a measurable answer. A practitioner, not a sponsor: you have personally moderated hundreds of customer sessions, and you can teach discussion-guide construction, 1:1 moderation, and ethnographic observation to a firmware engineer. Research is something you do and then operationalize — never something you only commission. A router: you instinctively classify work as net‑new, plus‑one, or operational excellence, and you scale discovery rigor to the cost of being wrong after release. A carrier board revision and a UI iteration deserve different amounts of pre‑commitment evidence, and you know it in your bones. A servant leader with conviction: you hold vision and standards intensely, and you stay off the implementation steering wheel. Teams own solutions. Your job is making sure evidence reaches them — and that nobody, at any level, overrides it casually. Fluent in atoms and bits: you have shipped products where hardware lead times, certification, and field deployment constrain iteration, and you know which loops to front‑load and which to instrument post‑release. Responsibilities Own and operate the whole-product evidence system: VOC, CPT, and CCT standards; research operations; routing decisions; win/loss instrumentation; and measurable outputs at every mile marker. Personally moderate customer sessions on a regular cadence, and run the apprenticeship that rotates engineers and designers through moderator, note‑taker, and ethnographer roles. Own the Systems product strategy: the continuous product strategy across software, data, embedded systems, and testing tools — and coordinate the integrated whole-product strategy with your hardware counterpart. Support closing deals with choosers. Own win/loss as product evidence, and bring deal signals into routing with the same anti‑bias discipline we apply to user research. One loud chooser is not the market. Decide deal‑specific product commitments: the line between serving the market and roadmap‑by‑anecdote runs through your desk. Make fleet telemetry the confirmation layer: partner with the Heads of Data and Testing Tools and Frameworks to instrument customer confirmation testing (CCT) on the operating fleet — delivery performance, reliability, and program economics. As an owner‑operator, our P&L is the product's confirmation metric. Hire, grow, and level the product management and product design teams. Other duties and projects as assigned. What You'll Inherit on Day One A working evidence system, handed over by the executive who has been operating it—handed over by the executive who has been operating it— with a staged transfer of chooser relationships (ride‑along, co‑lead, lead) across your first few months. A product manager and a product designer, in seat, with open requisitions for both roles. A fully instrumented operating fleet—telemetry infrastructure most product leaders spend years wishing for—and a standing internal user panel in our field, commissioning, and operations teams. A published RAPID decision‑rights charter, written before this search began, that we will review with you during the interview process. A CEO who authored our product methodology, and an executive team committed to evidence over seniority. Required Experience Hardware‑software integrated products or comparably complex multi‑disciplinary systems, with firsthand experience of the asymmetric cost of being wrong in atoms versus bits. 10+ years in product roles, with 4+ years leading product managers and designers — building a product organization, not only inheriting one. A personal body of customer research measured in hundreds of moderated sessions, with demonstrated ability to teach the craft to non‑researchers. Direct commercial exposure: deals you personally closed or rescued, with product decisions traceable to them; a win/loss program you built or ran, and a roadmap decision it reversed. Quantitative fluency: product metrics you defined from raw telemetry or event data and used to kill or scale work — enough hands‑on data skill that you are not hostage to someone else’s dashboard. Specific, verifiable examples of evidence reversing a position you held publicly. Preferred Experience Founder, founding‑team, or early‑stage B2B product executive experience. Energy domain: battery storage, solar + storage, EV charging, or other grid‑interactive systems; virtual power plant or demand response programs; utility programming economics. Standards context: UL 9540/9540A, UL 1741, IEEE 1547/2800, and grid interconnection processes. Owner‑operator, fleet, or asset‑backed business models where company P&L confirms product value. Selling capex‑backed outcomes to commercial and industrial executive buyers. Additional Details Background Check All candidates are subject to a background check. Location + Travel The role is based in Utah including hybrid remote with work based in your home office and our Salt Lake City/South Salt Lake warehouses, as needed. Schedule Full-Time, Salaried Compensation $190,000-230,000 (Note: We have the flexibility to hire at different levels, which may impact the corresponding pay range.) Work Authorization Applicants must already have the legal authorization to work in the US without requiring any employer sponsorship. Physical Requirements Regularly operates a computer and other peripheral office equipment such as a printer or mouse. Ability to communicate information so others can understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Maintain regular and reliable attendance, whether working remotely or on-site, with the ability to perform job duties safely and effectively. Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English required. When on the production floor, required to don personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to ear protection, gloves, eye protection and/or safety helmet. When on the production floor, ability to observe, detect and respond to audible and visual machine malfunction warnings.
