The Orlando VA Healthcare System is seeking an experienced Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS). The incumbent has the oversight of more than one laboratory specialty such as but not limited to Chemistry and Special Chemistry. The Supervisory CLS is responsible for providing technical, professional, and administrative leadership for the Chemistry/Special Chemistry Clinical Laboratory Section at the main Hospital Medical Center Facility in Orlando, FL. The Supervisory CLS ensures the efficient operation of a high-complexity laboratory classified as group 1a, which processes over one million tests annually. The incumbent maintains effective working relationships with other hospital departments and is fully accountable for managing a large laboratory staff, including direct supervision of at least one senior (GS-12) subordinate. This role includes oversight of laboratory workflow, staff training/competency, compliance with regulatory standards, and quality assurance measures.

Duties include:

• Plans and schedules on-going work and huddles; defines bench assignments for optimum efficiency and workflow. Adjusts staffing levels or work procedures as needed.
• Chooses methods for achieving work goals, objectives, and management strategies.
• Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance and the reporting of nonconformance events.
• Ensures corrective action is initiated when test performance deviates from established performance specifications or nonconforming events.
• The incumbent develops and serves as an approving official for position descriptions, functional statements, performance standards, and competency programs for staff and conducts annual performance ratings.
• Acts as a consultant to the Supervisory CLS (Laboratory Manager), Pathologists and Chief of P&LMS regarding implementation of programs/policies. Gives advice, counsel, and instruction to other individuals on both work and administrative matters.
• Acts as the technical supervisor for personnel, quality control, records control, proficiency testing, inspection, and accreditation, nonconformance events of ordered laboratory procedures within their assigned laboratory specialties.
• Coordinates with the Supervisor CLS (Laboratory Manager), Laboratory Director and/or pathologist(s) the acquisition and verification plan of all test instruments/methods utilized within their assigned laboratory specialty.
• Selects instruments/methodologies and/or procedures, which are appropriate for the service in a high-volume laboratory and congruent with patient consideration.
• Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts, and maintains laboratory instruments. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures, and quality control checks. Identifies the cause of common problems and assures corrective actions and repairs are completed.
• Prepare administrative reports, manages fiscal matters, budget, and contracting and property management within their section(s).
• Assures all procedure manuals remain up to date, monitors/forecast reagent/testing inventory levels, ordering clinical lab supplies and follow up standing orders.
