Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose – The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for our patients and must represent BJC with the highest standard of customer service, compassion, and professionalism. This position facilitates all components of the patients' entrance into any BJC facility and requires a high level of emotional intelligence, professionalism, and the ability to make a personal connection. The role significantly impacts reimbursements and prevention of denials by accurate collection of demographics, insurance information, benefit verification, and point‑of‑service collection. Selecting the correct patient from the Master Person Index (MPI) is critical to patient safety. Responsibilities Utilize critical thinking skills to solve a variety of situations, anticipating patients' needs and responding in a patient‑focused manner in person, over the computer, or by phone. Perform hospital registration and scheduling within multiple BJC systems, ensuring proper patient identification, registration, scheduling, insurance verification, and document retrieval. Validate that orders are complete and correctly signed, and that the correct test is ordered, maintaining accurate patient records. Communicate preparation instructions, financial responsibilities, and collect applicable patient payments. Understand and enforce compliance with Medicare Secondary Payer, HIPAA Privacy Standards, Bill of Rights, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements; each patient completes HIPAA acknowledgement. Maintain a constant state of alertness and work safely in a safety‑sensitive environment.
