Senior Financial Analyst - Department of Medicine

Summary

The Department of Medicine is seeking an experienced Senior Financial Analyst to serve as a strategic financial partner to departmental and division leadership, providing financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and portfolio management support for a large and complex academic department. Reporting to the Director of Finance for the department, this role leads financial planning efforts, develops business cases and proformas for new initiatives, monitors financial performance, and delivers actionable insights to support decision-making. Additionally, the Senior Financial Analyst also serves as a subject matter expert and mentor for financial analysts across the department.

The Senior Financial Analyst role is intended to support the department's most complex and strategically important portfolio (~$85M) while serving as an analytical resource and mentor within a six-person finance team. The position requires advanced expertise in financial modeling, forecasting, and strategic planning; oversight of high-value portfolios; and the ability to mentor analysts and provide leadership on major departmental initiatives without adding a formal management layer. This role creates a clear career path while strengthening the department's overall financial planning and analytical capabilities.

Job Duties

Financial Analysis and Portfolio Management (80%)

• Manage the portfolio of approximately $85M related to the Divisions of General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics & Palliative Care, and Adult Developmental Medicine.
• Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning activities for assigned divisions and programs. 
• Perform complex financial analyses to evaluate operational performance, identify trends, and support strategic decision-making.
• Support departmental and division strategic planning through scenario modeling and financial impact assessments.
• Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting and variance analyses for the assigned divisions and programs.
• Monitor revenue, expenses, productivity, staffing costs, and key financial performance indicators.
• Manage personnel allocations and distributions.
• Partner with division leadership to review financial performance and develop action plans to achieve budgetary goals.
• Review and approve financial transactions, journals, and budget adjustments for compliance with institutional policies.
• Support resource allocation decisions through data-driven financial recommendations.

Strategy & Leadership Support (20%)

• Serve as a trusted advisor to department and division leadership on financial and operational matters.
• Partner with departmental leaders to develop business plans supporting expansion initiatives. 
• Develop financial models, business plans, and proformas for new clinical, research, education, and strategic initiatives.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to Financial Analysts and support the development of standardized financial reporting practices.
• Drive process improvements that enhance financial reporting accuracy, efficiency, and transparency. 
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance or a related field.
• Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

• Master's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or related field.
• Experience in academic medicine, physician practice finance, or healthcare operations.
• Experience developing proformas and business cases for strategic initiatives.
• Experience mentoring analysts or leading projects across multiple stakeholders.
• Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, financial modeling, variance analysis).
• Proven ability to work independently.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to advise faculty, leadership, and external sponsors.
