Summary:

The Research Library of the New Jersey State Library, affiliated with Thomas Edison State University, connects people with information and resources through its service to all branches of New Jersey state government, NJ libraries, Thomas Edison State University staff and students, and members of the public. The Research Library has a new opening for an entry level librarian.

Description:

Under the close supervision of a Librarian 3 or a higher-level librarian, you will provide original and copy cataloging using Horizon, OCLC, MarcEdit and other tools as needed; create authority records; and work with MARC metadata in all formats as needed to support the New Jersey State Library’s collections. Responsibilities will also include, but are not limited to, uploading digitized items to the appropriate repositories. You may also work with a team to develop research guides; create and present webinars, tutorials, and classes on library resources and services; promote library services and collections; and participate in other special projects as assigned. You will be working collaboratively with staff from other units. You should be tech savvy and thrive in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Examples of Work:

- Performs original and complex copy cataloging using Horizon, OCLC, MarcEdit, RDA, LCSH, LCC, and other tools as needed. Works with MARC metadata in all formats and subjects as needed to support the New Jersey State Library’s collections

- Creates authority records at the national level

- Manages bibliographic authority control processes using Horizon, DSpace, OCLC, and other tools as needed to ensure the internal consistency of the Libraries’ bibliographic databases and digital repository platforms

- Oversees quality control for bibliographic and authority metadata. Analyzes potential corrections and executes batch changes to manage and update bibliographic, holdings, and item data

- Maintains knowledge of current and emerging issues and trends in identity management and authority metadata, including linked data, BIBFRAME, and semantic web developments

- Creates and maintains documentation for areas of responsibility

- Participates in appropriate professional development, continuing education, national-level professional service, or research activities

- Participates in digital projects to in unique library collections or to promote library services

- Responsibly spends funds assigned based on collection subject areas

- Prepares reports containing findings and recommendations for different internal and external audiences

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Familiarity with the processes of creating bibliographic and authority metadata; familiarity with authority control processes

- Knowledge of current trends in metadata and cataloging standards and technologies

- Awareness of and interest in emerging technologies, including linked data

- Experience providing direct research assistance in a special or academic library setting, strong preference on experience with government documents, including those used for legal research.

- Experience supporting learners from varied backgrounds and varied technical abilities.

- Basic working knowledge of library cataloging, use of metadata and/or datasets.

- Ability to demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and the use desperate sources to find solutions.

- Strong attention to detail; ideal when demonstrated through experience working with structured data, controlled vocabularies, and metadata/cataloging standards.

- Ability to work collaboratively and independently with minimal direct supervision.

- Flexible and able to handle/prioritize multiple ongoing projects and research demands at a given time.

- Very comfortable working in digital environments – digital collections, digital repositories preferred.

- Comfortable rendering information via UX design work or data visualization, through library s specific platforms, or presentation software

- Comfortable creating/editing webpages or digital content.

- Ability to work collaboratively with library staff at all levels.

- Displays critical thinking/problem solving skills and

- Reads, writes, speaks, understands, and communicates in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Requir ements:

Education: A Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences in a library program accredited by the American Library Association or from a New Jersey college Master’s program in Library Science that has been deemed acceptable by Thomas Edison State University.

License: Possession of or eligibility for a valid New Jersey license as a Professional Librarian.

Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52: 14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act," which became effective September 1, 2011, all persons newly hired by the College/New Jersey State Library on or after that date shall have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Employees hired prior to September 1, 2011, who transfer from within the University/New Jersey State Library, or from another State of New Jersey appointing authority without a break in service greater than 7 days but who reside outside of the State of New Jersey, are not required to change their principal residence to New Jersey in order to comply with the Act.
