JOB SUMMARY
The mission of the DSU is to provide oversight and management of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Laboratory's forensic biology programs and initiatives in research, quality assurance, training, and information technology to both enhance and maintain the LD's capacity to conduct high-quality DNA and serological examinations in a skilled, progressive and responsive manner and to ensure compliance with all applicable guidelines and standards.
KEY REQUIREMENTS

• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance
• Some travel may be required
• Must serve a two-year probationary period as an FE, beginning when the person selected for the position enters on duty as an FE trainee.
• As a condition of employment, DNA samples are required from all FBI personnel who interact with evidence or federal DNA database samples in Laboratory Division (LD) space or whose work requires them to enter LD examination areas where evidence or DNA database samples are processed or examined as part of the quality control process to detect sample/evidence contamination, in accordance with the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA), 75 Federal Register (FR) 68932; 29 C.F.R. 1635.8(b)(6).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires manual dexterity, flexibility and some assignments which require considerable, strenuous physical exertion, which may require lifting of objects of up to fifty (50) pounds or more. Much of the time is spent inventorying and processing evidence which requires walking, bending, stretching, crawling and lifting.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work performed in a laboratory setting which may involve regular, recurring exposure to hazardous materials, toxic substances, and blood borne pathogens. Incumbents are expected to follow safe laboratory practices and wear protective clothing, including facial masks, safety glasses, gloves, and use fume flow hoods as warranted.
MAJOR DUTIES:
GS-12:

• Perform analyses utilizing the full range of analytical methods including sophisticated instrumentation.
• Conduct tests using classical DNA methodology using various instruments.
• Prepare and furnish oral and written reports to federal and state government stakeholders.
• Present necessary testimony in court.

GS-13:
In addition to the above, the person selected for the position will:

• Perform DNA casework testing methods and procedures on the most challenging evidence that requires testing using the most advanced methods and instrumentation.
• Identify new DNA products and analytical procedures for evaluation and troubleshoot issues encountered using current methods.
• Present testimony in support of new and novel DNA methods in support of their admissibility in court.

Positive Education Requirement

1. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

Specialized Experience (SE)
GS-12: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. SE is defined as follows:

• Reporting examination results and providing expert opinion testimony in court.
• Conducting training sessions for less experienced examiners, FBI investigators, prosecutors, et al.
• Analyzing, evaluating, consolidating, then furnishing limited observation findings, and making recommendations on modifications and procedures.
• Evaluating the adequacy of information and tests performed.

GS-13: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
In addition to the above the person selected for the position will be:
