Market Risk Analyst

INEOS Energy is the energy division of INEOS. We produce and trade oil, gas, power and liquefied natural gas (LNG). We operate offshore assets across the Danish and UK North Sea, onshore assets in South Texas, and a newly acquired deepwater portfolio in the deepwater of the Gulf of America – alongside low carbon investments, including Project Greensand our carbon storage project in the Danish North Sea, that will help sustain the business through the energy transition. INEOS Energy Trading operates as the single face to the Gas, LNG, Power, Carbon, and Crude Oil commodity markets for INEOS. Our core mission is to fully monetise INEOS Energy's equity oil and gas production across Europe and the US. Beyond this, the Trading and Business Development teams are tasked with originating and developing third-party physical business. We also support the wider INEOS group by leveraging our carbon trading capabilities and supplying crude oil, LNG, gas, and power to INEOS's industrial base for deals on pipeline capacity, trucks, storage tanks, and shipping. Reporting to the Market Risk Manager, the Market Risk Analyst will independently identify, measure, and report on the level of economic and market risk arising from new business proposals, material contracts, and trading exposure, advising the commercial teams on mitigation strategies and risk appetite. The role calls for a commercially aware, entrepreneurial mindset within the mid-office function, supporting a robust risk governance framework through clear policies and procedures. As the Market Risk Analyst, you will provide daily performance and market risk analysis for the trading business, working closely with traders and other parts of the business. The role offers exposure to the full commodity trading lifecycle – physical and financial – spanning Risk, Finance, Back Office, and multiple business units, within the fast-evolving world of energy trading, with a primary focus on oil and gas, LNG as a growing area of focus. RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES Market Risk Maintain operational ownership of key trading risk metrics across VaR, stress testing, skew analysis and build on structural models. Provide risk analysis to support the assessment of new trading strategies, trading limits, and other business decisions across a range of commodities, primarily physical oil trading. Evaluate complex trading strategies using quantitative models (e.g., Black-Scholes) and value long-term deals across multiple market scenarios to identify key risk sensitivities. Support physical and derivatives trading team members in taking risk and provide pre-trade risk assessment on new positions and strategies, monitor exposures against limits, and escal… risk concentrations promptly. Independently validate the valuation of long-term deals, assessing the impact of a range of market scenarios on risk-to-reward and identifying key sensitivities. Support systems strategy for middle office functions, covering exposure management. Work closely with the Market Risk Manager, Market Risk colleagues, and cross-functionally to ensure effective allocation of trading risk capital to ensure effective allocation of trading risk capital (market, credit, cash). Apply mark-to-market principles within the control environment, owning and ensuring effective reporting to key stakeholders and relevant business performance processes. Work collaboratively to support trade control and finance functions where needed, including the setup of new business activities and second line of defence monitoring of technical team. EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION & SKILLS University degree in Mathematics, Economics, Finance, or a related discipline. 2-3 years of experience in a market risk role within a commodity trading company or bank. Deep knowledge of US energy markets and associated benchmarks. Experience with US physical oil and Canadian physical commodities is a strong plus. Strong experience using coding with Python for data analysis and financial modelling Familiarity with one or more ETRM systems is an advantage (e.g. Horizon, FEA) Strong knowledge of risk metrics such as VaR, stress testing, and scenario analysis Able to work independently, analysing and reporting risks and exposures objectively Solid knowledge of the MS Office suite, including excellent Excel and VBA skills, knowledge of Power BI and SQL is a plus Advanced understanding of pricing and hedging of physical activities using derivative instruments (futures, swaps, options, etc.) Comfortable engaging regularly with traders and management on exposure and P&L Able to provide accurate, relevant risk reporting and analysis to support control of the trading team's activities Strong understanding of mark-to-market for risk, with a working knowledge of cash/credit Full command of English, both spoken and written BEHAVIOURAL SKILLS & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES Highly driven, determined, and hardworking, able to deliver against tight deadlines Experience building relationships with senior stakeholders Excellent people skills, comfortable engaging with external and internal contacts at both executive and technical levels Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills Well organised, with strong attention to detail A critical and strategic thinker, with a long-term view on risk but a short-term, pragmatic view on implementation Versatile, and enjoys working within a team environment Able to actively challenge sensitive issues constructively while maintaining strong working relationships Proactively identify potential issues to the appropriate teams or stakeholders Relocation: Preferential treatment will be granted to candidates residing in the Houston metropolitan area.
