Job Description The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) is recruiting for a Bioinformatics Analyst I for our Human Disease Ontology Knowledgebase (DO-KB) team. We are looking for an experienced and motivated scientific curator to lead analysis of disease classifications and nosology. The Bioinformatics Analyst I will contribute to ongoing Human Disease Ontology research projects. The Bioinformatics Analyst will participate in the generation, quality control, and analysis of disease-related data types, working closely with faculty, clinicians, bioinformatics analysts, and engineers at the Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS). The Bioinformatics Analyst will work with the DO-KB team and will be primarily responsible for curation of new disease knowledge, interacting within the UMSOM system and externally with clinical and biomedical researchers. Join our team to expand our structured knowledge system, to help organize, integrate, and analyze disease mechanisms and features. The successful applicant will work on a range of data analysis, data integration, curatorial and community-engagement activities for DO-KB. This will include leading annotation initiatives within DO-KB and working directly with the research community to foster data coordination. Primary Duties Contribute to genomic research projects and scientific analysis of the disease related data generated by those projects using a variety of databases and software applications. Generate, annotate, gather, or analyze data and prepare for further analysis, or research. Following established procedures or specific scientific protocols, add value to data generated by genomic projects through annotation, curation, and quality assurance. Coordinate the investigation and ingestion of disease classification, nosology, and mechanism information. Contribute to the development of DO-KB ontologies (Human Disease Ontology, Disease Driver Ontology, Symptom Ontology, Pathogen Transmission Ontology). Perform data mining and synthesis activities using various internal resources, public databases, and publications. Mine and organize literature and authoritative resources. Participate in community outreach and training. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, including fields such as Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or Bioinformatics. Experience: Prior genomic research experience with experience with Windows and UNIX-based operating systems relations and database management systems strongly preferred. Preferred Experience: Prior data curation and/or clinical data management. A background in data science, data annotation, disease nosology, and/or disease classification. Experience working on scientific curation, biocuration, disease-related data annotation (phenotypes, genetic, rare, or infectious diseases or cancers). Working with research scientists assessing and annotating biomedical data. Working in a production environment managing scientific data. Experience with data integration and data management. Experience in coordinating disease-focused clinical working groups. Demonstrated experience working within collaborative teams. Previous experience coordinating disease nomenclature reviews. Supervisory Experience: N/A. Certification/Licensure: N/A. Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. Effective communication and teamwork skills, working within a busy team and ability to interact with collaborators and resource users. Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills. Excellent organization and time management skills and the ability to manage a variety of diverse tasks and shifting priorities. Strong interpersonal skills: ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff and collaborators. Ability to demonstrate initiative, strong attention to details, flexibility, and willingness to multi-task in a rapidly evolving scientific context. Strong analytical abilities and communication skills. Hiring Range: $69,000 - $72,000 commensurate with education and experience.
