Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Position: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Job Goal: To operate and maintain the treatment plant and pump stations. Supervision: Reports to Head Custodian and the Supervisor of Buildings, Grounds, and Maintenance. Requirements Certified Massachusetts Grade 4M Wastewater Operators License. At least two years experience as a wastewater treatment operator. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Preferred: At least three years experience as a waste water treatment plant operator or equivalent. Bachelor of Science in Environmental, Biology, Chemical, Sanitary, or Civil Engineering. Associate’s degree in the above fields. Certified Massachusetts Grade 4M Wastewater Operators License. Performance Responsibilities Shall routinely operate, perform, and thoroughly understand plant processes and equipment and be capable of making adjustments as necessary to ensure compliance of the Plant’s D.E.P. permit. When necessary, shall carry out maintenance, adjustments and repairs of various plant equipment. Shall routinely perform and thoroughly understand laboratory tests and procedures. Must follow all applicable safety practices. Must maintain required Training Contact Hours (TCH’s). Performs all other duties contained in the back‑up wastewater treatment plant operator, custodian, outside maintenance, and maintenance job descriptions. Other related duties as may be assigned by the Head Custodian and the Supervisor of Buildings, Grounds, and Maintenance. Special Knowledge and Abilities Thoroughly understand plant process and equipment, recording, record keeping, and reporting procedures. Capable of following both oral and written instructions and giving both oral and written instructions. Should operate a variety of hand and power tools, have general mechanical background. Able to work independently and with others, use a personal computer and general data acquisition equipment. Must be available for scheduled overtime on weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Physical Requirements Delivery of full range of wastewater services. Several hours a day walking, standing, sitting, climbing. Frequent physical exertion such as reaching, bending, twisting. Frequent pulling and pushing of materials. Use of hand and power tools. Occasionally crawling. Lifting objects of 50 pounds frequently and over 50 pounds occasionally. Environmental Conditions Work outdoors, occasionally in extreme weather: rain, snow, hot/cold extremes. Exposed to gasoline and/or diesel fumes, chemicals, noxious smells, high noise levels. Expected to have foul weather gear, rubber gloves, steel toe protection when necessary.
