About The Role Innovative Defense Technologies (IDT), a leading defense technology company, is seeking an Advanced Concepts Engineer to be based out of one of IDT’s offices. This person will work with a fast‑paced team of mission‑focused engineers, developing cutting‑edge technology to solve customer problems. Initiative, creativity, reliability, and efficient teamwork are required to successfully deliver innovative solutions in this dynamic customer space. The selected Advanced Concepts Engineer will turn customer goals and needs into solutions, applying cutting‑edge technologies to new problems to rapidly define options and communicate with customers and IDT designers. This engineer will work with product teams to develop and deploy solutions, continuously revising and improving those solutions with evolving capabilities and user feedback. The ideal candidate will have skills in distributed systems, cloud‑based deployment, test and evaluation in digital environments, and applying Agentic AI or LLM solutions to novel problems. A strong familiarity with presentation and visualization methods to communicate and understand results is also ideal. Clearance & Location Requirements All applicants must be able to obtain and maintain an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance. This is an on‑site position requiring at least 4 days in the office, based in Arlington, VA; Mount Laurel, NJ; or San Diego, CA. Key Responsibilities What You Will Do: Develop test/data algorithms for reducing instrumentation and data streams to meaningful quantification of system actions, behaviors, and outcomes. Architect System‑of‑System solutions from IDT’s integration technologies to provide novel solutions to rapidly evolving problem spaces. Evaluate customer and operational needs to define system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters, and assure compatibility of all functional and program interfaces. Apply advanced systems/software technologies and principles to develop innovative solutions for in‑service and next‑generation complex software systems. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to rapidly define, design, develop, integrate, and deploy tactical and test systems. Perform analyses to optimize total system of systems and/or system architecture. Determine operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions. Communicate directly with customers and users to understand needs and drive cross‑functional technical issues and challenges to closure. Pay Range $90,000 – $184,000 / year (ranges may vary based on experience, skills, and education). Skills, Knowledge & Expertise Who You Are (Required) Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, another STEM field, or equivalent full‑time professional experience. 3‑5+ years of relevant experience. Experience defining new solutions with new and existing technologies, creating loosely coupled system solutions that promote rapid evolution and redeployment. Ability and interest in the logical, systematic conversion of program requirements into viable technical solutions. Mathematical and communication skills to understand what system users and testers need to make decisions and do assessments rapidly and accurately. Understanding of System Engineering and Software Engineering best practices. Ability to communicate with customer subject matter experts and understand their processes and designs. Ability to apply analysis to systems, data, and processes to determine if exhibited behavior is expected. Understanding of the activities described by the Systems Engineering V‑Model. Ability to work on‑site with potential hybrid flexibility. Ability to travel approximately 10%. What Makes You Stand Out Knowledge of modern AESA or DBF radar designs, distributed kill chains, combat system, and management of distributed data for decision making. Ability to create Agentic AI workflows and LLM prompts to accelerate data turning into decisions, accelerate system design, and facilitate rapid trade studies and product decisions. Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering/Model Based Software Development using SysML or UML. Demonstrated knowledge in related disciplines (e.g., Software Engineering). Familiarity with Agile development processes. Experience developing or testing large, complex systems. Experience implementing algorithms in C++, Python, MATLAB, or other languages. Systems Engineering experience with system integration, verification, and validation testing. Experience designing and testing complex SW systems, especially DoD Systems or large distributed SW solutions. Experience performing test and integration, applying best engineering practices, and developing test methodologies. Experience with data visualization and presentation. Understanding of data instrumentation and data reduction techniques to use data to communicate system performance. Experience and proficiency with Requirements Management tools (e.g., DOORS). Experience identifying and describing software interfaces. Ability to perform concurrent assignments and adapt to changing priorities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
