Director of Estimating

Snapshot / Role Overview
We're seeking a Director of Estimating in Honolulu, Hawaii to lead preconstruction and estimating efforts across a full-service mechanical contracting operation serving Hawaii and Guam.

Impact

- Strengthen the estimating department through strategic leadership, training, and recruitment
- Enhance bid-to-win ratios through refined processes and strong customer relationships
- Support long-term backlog development and annual sales goals alongside senior leadership

Responsibilities
- Lead the Estimating Department, ensuring efficient, accurate, and cost-effective estimates across all project types
- Develop conceptual and budget estimates for Design-Build and early onboarding projects from RFP and schematic documents
- Collaborate with leadership on strategic planning, annual sales goals, and sustainable backlog development
- Facilitate weekly Opportunities Meetings to review new bids, project schedules, and recent bid status
- Review RFPs in advance of bidding to issue critical RFIs and create favorable bid-leveling strategies
- Establish and maintain relationships with customers, vendors, and key industry contacts to improve project positioning
- Coordinate formal bid closings, submission strategies, and post-bid interviews with internal and external stakeholders
- Conduct project kick-off meetings to transition estimate assumptions and scope understanding to operations teams
- Develop and maintain a historical project pricing database for departmental use
- Support contract administration with scope and price reviews

Requirements
Must-Haves
- 10+ years of experience in plumbing and mechanical contracting with 5+ years in senior estimating leadership
- Proven experience estimating high-rise residential and commercial projects
- Strong conceptual and budget estimating skills across multiple trades including plumbing, hydronic piping, sheet metal, controls, and fire protection
- Proficiency with Excel, Bluebeam, and standard office tools
- Hands-on leadership style with strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills
- Stable work history demonstrating progressive responsibility

Nice-to-Haves
- Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Experience with CADest, Trimble, CAD MEP, or similar estimating software
- Familiarity with NAVFAC, USACE, and government project delivery
- Experience managing multi-discipline estimating teams
