Location Claremont, CA Job Posting Title Leadership Giving Officer and Philanthropic Advisor Basic Function Claremont McKenna College (CMC) is seeking an experienced leadership giving officer with the capacity to build and maintain high-impact donor relationships. This position is responsible for the qualification, cultivation and solicitation of leadership gifts from CMC alumni, parents and friends. The Leadership Giving Officer will be responsible for managing a portfolio of individuals who have the capacity to make gifts of $100,000 and above. The Leadership Giving Officer must actively seek out opportunities, both on and off-campus, to develop and implement initiatives that ensure a strong base of high-level philanthropic support in a cross‑collaborative manner, in partnership with the Office of Alumni and Parent Engagement, Annual Giving and Planned Giving. Responsibilities Develop and implement strategies for qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding donor prospects in the geographically‑assigned portfolio of approximately 150 prospects. Responsible for all direct interactions and communications with assigned prospects, including the solicitation of unrestricted annual gifts, Research Institute board commitments and leadership gifts of these prospects. Familiarize themselves with regional assignments, Presidential travel, Presidential fundraising priorities and priorities from other areas of the College to make a knowledgeable and persuasive presentation to donor prospects. Excel in a holistic approach, which uses all resources of the college, including events, college leadership, Admission, Athletics and the Soll Center for Student Opportunity. Work with the Office of Institute Relations to identify and recruit advisory board members for CMC’s eleven Research Institutes and Centers. Collaborate with Athletics Advancement staff to cultivate and solicit financial support for athletic priorities. Collaborate with the Assistant Vice President of Advancement on prospect strategy and with the Research & Relationship Management team on a regular basis. Maintain prospect tracking and regularly update the College’s records for each assigned constituent. Take the lead on special fundraising projects as they arise and are assigned. In collaboration with the Office of Stewardship, assist in developing a stewardship plan for donor‑funded named programs. Expect significant travel throughout the United States on a regional basis and possible international travel. Expect evening and weekend work around College events and activities. Other duties related to the position as they arise. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree required. Experience Five or more years of successful fundraising experience, including the solicitation of leadership level gifts and beyond. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, excellent writing skills, and the ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a dynamic and fast‑paced environment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated ability to set and implement a strategic plan for individual prospects; innovative mastery of leadership gifts management and best practices covering the art of individual relationships and the science of database management; familiarity with advancement systems. Working knowledge of the entire spectrum of gifts, from outright cash and stocks to bequests and annuities, as well as a basic understanding of relevant benefits of giving. Evidence of self‑motivation and ability to work collaboratively. Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to connect with donors and prospects of all levels. Ability to negotiate issues, resolve problems, and have strong influencing skills. Other Required Hours: Regular hours 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekend and evening work will occasionally be expected. Travel will be required. Classification and Status: Regular, full‑time, 12‑month, exempt, benefits‑eligible position. Physical Requirements: Sedentary (up to 10 lbs.). Supervisory Responsibility: None. Salary Range: $110,000 – $125,000 per year. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
