Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 1 year License: Active Illinois Nursing License Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: - Level 1 trauma experience - Previous travel experience - Experience working on a dedicated neuro unit - Heparin drip titration experience Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse in a Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit. The unit has 54 beds, consisting of semi-private rooms. The nurse-to-patient ratios during day shifts are 1:4-5 and during night shifts are 1:5-6. Common patient diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and neurological disorders, with some medical overflow. RNs are required to titrate drips, specifically Heparin based on PTT. There is a charge nurse available 24/7 who does not take an assignment unless necessary. A house supervisor is also present on each shift. Patient care technicians assist with patient care, with ratios of 1:9-10 during days and evenings, and 1:10-12 during nights. RNs may be required to troubleshoot respiratory equipment, although COVID patients are rare. The unit operates under housewide telemetry, so nurses do not need to read their own strips. Shift scheduling is for 12-hour shifts with a weekend requirement every other weekend. There is no standby or call requirement for this position. RNs may have to float to a general unit floor under certain conditions. Tattoos must be covered while on duty, and only ear piercings are allowed. Orientation lasts for two days, including computer training and unit-specific instruction with a preceptor.
