Assistant Principal

Starting Date: Immediately Scope of Responsibilities Assist the principal in providing educational leadership, coordinating and implementing policies and procedures of the School Board, Superintendent directives, Regional Superintendent and Division Heads. Performance Responsibilities / Essential Functions Supervise the instructional program. Prepare the instructional materials budget and textbook requisition. Supervise and evaluate teachers, discipline coordinators, counselors, and other staff as designated by the principal. Supervise, collect and review teacher lesson plans. Responsible for scheduling and leveling of students. Assist in supervision of the Guidance Program. Confers with teachers, students, and parents. Assist in orientation of teachers. Organize and supervise duty schedules. Schedule and supervise substitute personnel. Tours school plant periodically, making recommendations to the principal. Supervise transportation of students. Supervise student attendance and discipline. Work with all central office supportive personnel. Supervise the maintenance of personnel and student records. Supervise data processing functions. Evaluate school’s standard test scores and other data to determine strengths and weaknesses. Attend department head meetings at school and parish level when possible. Function as principal in the absence of the principal. Perform all other duties assigned by the principal. Supervise extra‑curricular activities. Work Environment / Hours Worked Work in an office‑type, climate‑controlled environment; outside areas subject to climate extremes. Eight‑hour work day with one hour lunch; may work evenings, weekends, holidays as required. Attend meetings in various locations. Communication Skills Communicate in standard English orally and in writing. Communicate appropriately to listeners of varying age and skill. Accurately give and receive information via tele‑communication systems. Communicate successfully and pleasantly with the public. Accurately compile and access data, summarize information, and provide written reports to supervisor. Represent school system at public functions. Equipment Used Typewriter, microcomputer, facsimile machine, calculator, copy machine, printers, folding machine, intercom, public address system, security alarm system and other office machines. Physical Involvement Sitting, standing, walking, running; monitor student behavior throughout the school environment during the work day. Operate office equipment. Reach, bend, lift 10 pounds; physically restrain another person(s) as necessary. Provide own transportation to school, work location and meeting sites. Mobility skills to access various work locations. Mental Involvement Understand and interpret written and verbal instructions from supervisor; cognizant of policy and procedures governing discipline and student services in the Jefferson Parish Public School System. Human Relations Involvement Work compatibly in group settings. Serve as a resource to administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents and community. Respond positively to supervision and accept suggestions for improvement. Minimum Qualifications Master’s Degree or higher with Louisiana Certification in Administration and Supervision (Principalship Certificate). Three (3) years of successful teaching experience. Teaching experience at the assigned level. Demonstrated ability to work with various groups. Desirable Qualifications Doctorate Degree. Evidence of preparation for high school/middle/junior school program administration. Successful school administrative experience.
