Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisory

Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Environmental Program Manager I (Supervisory), the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) plans, directs, and administers components of complex statewide pesticide regulatory programs. Coordinates and provides support and guidance to technical scientific regulatory staff. Coordinates activities that have a statewide impact such as developing regulations and permit conditions, interpreting laws and regulations and determining statewide consistency in their implementation. Ensures program effectiveness by evaluating statewide enforcement actions, serve as liaison with other programs and agencies, and implement management techniques to create positive change in branch operations. Collaborate with and provide guidance to County Agricultural Commissioners.

Working Conditions

The incumbent will work in a single-floor building, under artificial lighting. Occasional travel, including by automobile or by air, may be required to different parts of the states. Trips may be overnight and include multiple trips within a month.

NOTE: This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.

Beginning July 1, 2026, it is anticipated this position will be office-centered and employees will be expected to report to the office at least four days per week.
