Description The purpose of this position is to provide educational information to the public on solid waste, recycling, waste reduction, storm water pollution prevention, and other related environmental programs. This is accomplished by planning, scheduling, coordinating, tracking, reporting and conducting educational programs. Other duties include coordinating involvement in activities such as special events and promotional campaigns, maintaining and creating educational materials, creating and maintaining relevant website information and interacting with other City employees, citizens and the media. This position does not provide direction to other employees. Essential Job Functions Plans, develops and presents public education programs through lesson plans, selecting and creating educational materials and presentation methods, documenting education programs, analyzing data and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and scheduling and coordinates public education programs. Provide information to the community using TCEQ and NCTCOG information, materials and programs. Interacts with the public by creating written communications for the press, interacting with the media, coordinating and supervising involvement in activities including special events and promotional campaigns and ensuring the quality of department-related community programs (such as Keep Allen Beautiful) and other city-wide events. Records, prepares and submits reports that document the City’s environmental awareness educational programs for submission to City, State and/or National agencies. Identifies outside funding sources for department and City projects by researching State, Federal, and Foundation websites to locate grant opportunities. Creates and maintains a database of opportunities, determining feasibility, eligibility and requirements for grants. Discusses grant requirements with staff and grantors and also prepares and tracks grant submissions and reports. Job Requirements Education Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two year associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training. Experience At least one year of relevant experience providing educational instruction or information to the public. Previous experience creating and coordinating special events or promotional campaigns is a plus. Previous experience with MS Excel, Access and Publisher as well as experience with DreamWeaver is desired. Certification And Other Requirements Valid Texas Class C Drivers License Work Schedule Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Hours may change depending on when educational programs are offerred (may include some afternoons and evenings). SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Reading Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Math Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Writing Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study. Managerial Receives General Direction. The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically. Supervisory / Organizational Control Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, volunteers or temporary employees. Complexity Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents. Interpersonal / Human Relations Skills Very Frequent: More than 51% of work time. Vacation Part-time regular employees shall earn vacation leave in proportion to the time worked. Sick Leave Part-time regular employees shall accumulate sick leave in proportion to time worked. Retirement Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System. TMRS is a qualified tax deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account.
