Junior System Administrator

Location: Richmond, VA – Hybrid (3-4 Days Onsite)

Position Description:

Our client is seeking a motivated Junior Systems Administrator to support enterprise IT infrastructure, system administration, and day-to-day technology operations in Richmond, VA.

This opportunity is ideal for an entry-level or early-career IT professional with foundational experience in Windows Server, Linux, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, networking, PowerShell, and IT troubleshooting who is looking to expand their technical skills within a large enterprise environment.

The Junior Systems Administrator will assist with server administration, system monitoring, user account management, workstation support, infrastructure maintenance, and technical troubleshooting. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers, gain exposure to enterprise technologies, and develop hands-on experience supporting critical IT systems.

Responsibilities:

• Assist with day-to-day Windows Server and Linux system administration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Monitor server performance, system availability, and infrastructure health to identify and resolve technical issues.
• Perform routine system patching, updates, maintenance, and health checks.
• Troubleshoot basic server, workstation, network, application, and infrastructure issues.
• Support Microsoft 365 and Active Directory administration, including user account creation, permissions, access management, and account maintenance.
• Assist with network troubleshooting, including DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VLANs, and general connectivity issues.
• Support server deployments, application installations, system configurations, and infrastructure upgrades under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Assist with workstation setup, imaging, configuration, and end-user technical support.
• Provide escalated technical support for service desk tickets requiring additional investigation.
• Use basic PowerShell scripting to support administrative tasks, troubleshooting, and routine IT operations.
• Assist with virtualization technologies, cloud platforms, and enterprise infrastructure as needed.
• Follow established IT change management, security, and system administration procedures.
• Create and maintain technical documentation covering system configurations, troubleshooting steps, and standard operating procedures.
• Collaborate with systems engineers, network administrators, service desk teams, and other IT professionals to resolve technical issues.
• Participate in infrastructure projects, system implementations, and troubleshooting activities to expand technical knowledge and experience.

Required Skills/Education:

• Internship experience or 1–2 years of hands-on IT experience in systems administration, IT support, infrastructure support, or a related technical role.
• Foundational knowledge of Windows Server and Linux administration, including basic system configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Understanding of networking fundamentals, including DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VLANs, and basic network troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with Microsoft 365 administration and Active Directory, including user accounts, permissions, and access management.
• Basic knowledge of PowerShell scripting, gained through professional experience, internships, coursework, or hands-on labs.
• Experience troubleshooting servers, workstations, applications, and general IT infrastructure.
• Basic understanding of cloud computing concepts, including Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Familiarity with system monitoring, patch management, and routine IT maintenance.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication, organization, and documentation skills.
• Ability to follow technical procedures, work collaboratively, and manage multiple priorities.
• Self-motivated with a strong willingness to learn new technologies and grow within a systems administration role.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent technical certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Up to 2 years of professional experience supporting Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, virtualization, or enterprise IT infrastructure.
• Hands-on exposure to VMware, Hyper-V, or other virtualization technologies through work experience, internships, coursework, or labs.
• Experience with Microsoft 365 administration, including user provisioning, license management, and tenant configuration.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Entra ID (Azure Active Directory) and identity/access management concepts.
• Understanding of IT security fundamentals, including Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), Conditional Access, and endpoint management.
• Experience using ServiceNow, Jira, or other IT ticketing systems.
• Exposure to PowerShell automation or other scripting technologies.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and services within Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Entry-level IT certifications such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), or similar.
• Demonstrated initiative, technical curiosity, and a desire to develop advanced systems administration and infrastructure skills.
