ROLE OVERVIEW

The Controller will serve as the senior accounting leader at Makeup by Mario, responsible for the integrity of all financial reporting, accounting operations, and internal controls. Reporting directly to the VP of Finance, this role partners closely with FP&A and commercial finance to ensure a clean, audit-ready close, accurate inventory accounting, and strong foundational financial infrastructure to support MBM's continued global growth. This is a high-visibility role with broad ownership — ideal for a technically strong accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and is eager to build and improve processes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process end-to-end, ensuring accuracy and timeliness across all entities. Prepare and review consolidated financial statements in accordance with US GAAP. Manage the preparation of financial reporting packages for executive leadership and the Board. Coordinate with external auditors and manage the annual audit process. Accounting Operations Oversee all core accounting functions: AP, AR, payroll, fixed assets, and general ledger. Maintain and enforce the chart of accounts, ensuring clean coding and consistency across NetSuite. Manage the accrual and prepaid schedules, vendor reconciliations, and intercompany eliminations. Own inventory accounting, including COGS recognition, reserve calculations, and SKU-level reconciliation across fulfillment and capitalization items. Internal Controls & Compliance Design, document, and maintain a robust internal controls framework appropriate for a high-growth prestige brand. Ensure compliance with applicable tax regulations across US and international jurisdictions, coordinating with external tax advisors. Partner with Legal on contract review for financial obligations and commitments. Support state and local sales tax filings and nexus analysis. Systems & Process Improvement Serve as the primary owner of NetSuite, driving best-practice configuration and ongoing optimization. Identify and implement automation opportunities to reduce manual close tasks and improve data integrity. Partner with the FP&A team to align actuals reporting with forecasting and planning tools. Support the buildout of financial data infrastructure as MBM scales internationally. Team & Business Partnership Manage and develop a small accounting team, providing coaching, clear priorities, and structured review processes. Serve as a trusted partner to the VP of Finance, CFO, and cross-functional leaders on accounting matters. Interface with Sephora and other retail partners on vendor chargebacks, co-op/MDF accruals, and trade deductions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA required. 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role. Deep technical GAAP knowledge, including revenue recognition, inventory accounting, and lease accounting. Hands-on experience with NetSuite ERP — configuration, reporting, and workflow management. Experience in consumer products, retail, or CPG — familiarity with sell-in / sell-through dynamics and retailer trade terms strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to manage a full-cycle close in a lean environment. Strong analytical mindset with the ability to translate accounting detail into clear business narrative.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Experience with Sephora or specialty retail distribution, including chargeback and MDF/co-op accounting. Familiarity with multi-currency consolidation across international subsidiaries. Prior experience in a high-growth, founder-led or private equity-backed brand. Exposure to Power BI or similar BI tools for actuals reporting and close dashboards. Public accounting background (Big 4 or mid-tier) with subsequent industry transition.
