Job Overview Job Overview The University of Cincinnati’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine stands at a pivotal moment, one marked by significant opportunity to shape a modern, collaborative, academically strong, and clinically impactful future. A national search is underway to identify the next Chair. Founded in 1903, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has a strong history of involvement in undergraduate, medical, and postgraduate education, pathology service and the acquisition of new knowledge related to human disease. Key opportunities for the next Chair include advancing precision medicine and hematopathology capabilities, expanding research enterprises aligned with future NCI designation and Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center designation goals, and deepening clinical partnerships to enhance service integration. Research growth is also a central strategic opportunity, including recruitment of additional research faculty and development of cross‑departmental collaborations within the College of Medicine, Hoxworth Blood Center, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and beyond. The Chair will bring an expansive vision for the future of pathology and lab medicine. The Chair will drive the strategic direction of the department, steward excellence across clinical, research, and educational missions, and lead initiatives to recruit and retain top‑tier faculty. The Chair should have a proven track record across the spectrum of individual scholarship, collaborative academic leadership, clinical and research program development, educational excellence, successful faculty recruitment, retention, and advancement. Essential Functions In addition to being appointed the Chief of Pathology for UC Health, the Chair will be an integral leader in the College of Medicine (CoM) and needs to think and function in a system context. The Chair is responsible for expanding high impact clinical programs and innovative diagnostic services, rebuilding research infrastructure, and strengthening departmental culture to support faculty engagement and retention. Additionally, the Chair will be responsible for: Developing and communicating a vision for the future of the department and maintaining a strategic plan and goals that align with those of the CoM, UC Health, UC Physicians, VA Medical Center, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Directing and overseeing the quality and effectiveness of the department’s educational programs; fostering an environment that emphasizes and supports the importance of the department’s educational mission and recruitment of trainees. The candidate should have a track record of mentoring trainees and junior faculty to successful careers in Pathology. Encouraging and supporting investigation and innovation, scholarly activities, and productivity. Implementing initiatives to promote and increase extramurally funded research in the department including through portfolio comprised of NIH, philanthropic and industry sponsored projects. Directing and overseeing the clinical services of the department and ensuring clinical excellence through a focus on patient safety, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient centered care. The recruitment, management, evaluation, development, and retention of talented faculty to fulfill the needs and missions of the department and various stakeholders. Fostering a congenial, mentoring environment in which the trainees, faculty, and staff all feel supported and empowered to attain their greatest desired potential. The financial performance and long‑term fiscal stability of the department’s academic and clinical practice budgets. Developing annually, in collaboration with the department administrator, a budget for the department and overseeing management of department finances and resources in accordance with CoM and university policies and procedures. Seeking opportunities to increase philanthropic support for the department and CoM and actively participating in philanthropy and development programs. Modeling professionalism and ethical standards for faculty, residents, fellows, and staff and holding each of these cohorts similarly accountable. Required Education MD or MD/Ph.D. Required Experience Substantial leadership experience, a record of building research, and the ability to sustain partnerships that advance the academic, research, and clinical missions of the Department. An accomplished leader who understands current trends in healthcare and medical education and wants to make an impact on medical training and values the tripartite mission academic medical institutions promote. Additional Qualifications Considered The ideal candidate will meet the qualifications for the academic rank of Professor. The candidate will have obtained American Board of Pathology certification and possess or be eligible for a medical license in the State of Ohio, if applicable. The candidate must practice the highest level of personal integrity. Physical Requirements Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands. Compensation and Benefits Salary/Hourly Pay Rate Information: Comprehensive Tuition Remission UC provides tuition remission for you and your eligible dependents, covering tuition costs for nearly all undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the university.
