Talascend is currently seeking a Facility Maintenance Technician for a contract opportunity with our client in Cambridge, Massachusetts .


Overview


The Facility Maintenance Technician performs preventive and corrective maintenance on critical life sciences facility systems to ensure operational performance, regulatory compliance, and safety standards. This role supports research operations within a highly regulated environment, requiring technical knowledge across multiple disciplines.


Responsibilities

• Execute planned and reactive maintenance activities, including troubleshooting and repair of HVAC systems, laboratory equipment, clean utilities, and facility infrastructure
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire, Life Safety, and Control systems
• Conduct corrective maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime and ensure minimal disruption to client operations
• Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on systems such as pH neutralization, RODI, compressed air, vacuum systems, lighting, electrical generators, and security card readers
• Monitor and maintain environmental control systems including temperature, humidity, air pressure differentials, and air quality parameters
• Prioritize maintenance activities, planned shutdowns, and restarts to support uninterrupted research operations
• Participate in incident response for facility issues impacting laboratory operations
• Maintain building systems including Building Automation System, Lighting Control System, and Access Control
• Perform daily systems rounds, utilizing BAS and visual inspections to evaluate critical systems for alarms and out-of-tolerance conditions
• Support backup power systems, emergency generators, and uninterruptible power supplies, responding to system alarms following established protocols
• Collaborate with Operations, EHS, Security, IT, and Research teams, serving as a point of contact for facility-related escalations
• Coordinate efforts in small and medium-sized projects, managing vendors for routine maintenance and emergency repairs
• Evaluate vendors and suppliers regarding quality and competitive pricing
• Support receiving and distribution of packages, mail, and deliveries
• Support energy efficiency, sustainability initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts related to facility operations
• Conduct regular building inspections for leaks, damage, or deficiencies
• Perform carpentry tasks including wall repair, painting, hanging writing boards and shelving, and hardware repairs
• Provide basic locksmithing services including repair or replacement of door hardware, closers, locks, and cylinders
• Assist with room configuration activities such as moving chairs and tables for meetings or events
• Support lab moves, space reconfigurations, and infrastructure upgrades
• Manage lab glass wash processes
• Utilize documentation practices for maintenance records, work orders, and inspection logs
• Support internal audits and regulatory readiness activities
• Liaise with EHS to ensure compliance with local, state, federal guidelines, and company policies
• Ensure safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials, maintaining a clean and safe workplace
• Manage lab waste removal, weekly shower/eyewash testing, and fire extinguisher inspections
• Provide responsive support for facility requests and maintain professional client relationships
• Review client service request summaries to identify operational issues
• Lead and assist with event setup/teardown, including electrical, audio-visual, and security coordination as needed
• Provide after-hours support for critical alarm response, system failures, and emergencies in coordination with operations teams

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or trade school graduate required
• Minimum 2-5 years of similar facility maintenance experience
• Demonstrated organizational skills, especially in maintenance operations
• Ability to manage vendors onsite
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
• Ability to analyze system operations, determine causes of problems, and take corrective actions
• Ability to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods
• Capability to bend, kneel, squat, reach, and lay to access equipment
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, and navigate facility infrastructure
• Comfort working with PPE and in controlled environmental conditions

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years' experience in pharmaceutical or academic research/laboratory environments
• Trade licenses in HVAC, Electrical, and/or Plumbing systems
• Understanding of HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing systems for research facilities
• EPA Universal CFC certification
• OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour safety training
• Additional certifications in relevant trades are highly desirable
