About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Progressive Care Unit Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 06:45 - 19:15 Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 2 years License: RN License Required Certifications: ACLS and BLS Required Must-Have: Stepdown experience Telemetry experience Description: The primary patient population includes cardiovascular surgery and vascular surgery patients. This may include open heart surgery such as CABG, AVR, MVR, Bentall, and TAVR. Thoracic lung surgeries like lobectomy and thoracotomy are also treated. Additional procedures include esophagogastrectomy and AAA repairs, both open and endovascular. Patients may also be overflow medical cardiology cases with diagnoses like heart failure, DKA, chest pain, sepsis, and heart block. The unit has 40 cardiac surgery stepdown beds and approximately 100 staff members. Staffing includes charge RNs, RNs, and patient care technicians. Patient ratios are 1:5 for RNs and 1:13 for patient care technicians. Equipment includes Baxter IV pumps, CADD epidural pumps, and various lifts. The electronic medical record system used is Cerner. Preferred candidates will have prior experience with cardiovascular and vascular surgery populations. This includes familiarity with open heart surgeries, TAVR, lobectomies, AAA repairs, and fem-pop bypass procedures within the past year. CVICU experience is also preferred. Typical procedures performed on the unit include epidural management, chest tube management, tube feedings, and IV glucagon management. Cardiac medication management includes drugs such as phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, and ketamine. The ideal candidate will be a team player who enjoys a fast-paced environment and is flexible. Weekend requirements include a minimum of six weekend shifts within a six-week schedule period. There is no call requirement for this position.
