Position Overview

Position Title: Dentist (full license) or Limited License Dentist Full-time (30-40 hours weekly)

New Bedford Community Health (NBCH) is a fast-paced federally qualified Community Health Center dedicated to advancing preventive and holistic health through innovative, compassionate and evidenced-based care. Our mission is to deliver integrated dental, medical, and mental health outpatient care to the diverse and underserved patient populations in New Bedford.

The Dentist will examine patients, review medical histories, interpret diagnostic tests, and provide appropriate treatment and education to the patient. The Dentist will document treatment appropriately in the Electronic Health Record and follow the Health Center's policies and procedures regarding quality care and compliance.

Key Tasks & Qualifications

Full License Dentist

• Provide general dental treatments, including, but not limited to examinations of all types (periodic, comprehensive, limited/emergency), prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, simple extractions, limited surgical extractions, removable prosthodontics, fixed prosthodontics, single canal endodontic treatment, implant restoration, amalgam and composite and glass ionomer restorative treatments, sealants, prescription of medications, oral hygiene instructions, and counseling
• Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to manage and provide appropriate dental care to patients of all ages
• Responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of dental treatment plans
• Work collaboratively with the other Dental Department staff including, but not limited to dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental receptionists, dental director, sterilization staff, dental practice manager, registration supervisor, and the other dentists
• Provide and facilitate patient and/or family participation in educational opportunities related to dental health status and utilize additional resources when indicated to ensure patients and/or families make informed decisions
• Maintain accurate, legible, and timely (within 2 business days) documentation of patient encounters in the dental EMR (Dentrix) and promptly (within 1 business day) respond to all inquiries, emails, internal messaging (Microsoft Teams, cellular text messages, etc.)
• Work closely with the Dental Director and Practice Manager to address problems as they arise in daily schedules as well as emergent patient care
• Collaborate and coordinate dental care with other NBCH departments such as PCPs, mental health providers, OBAT providers, NBCH staff, as well as external referral providers
• Participate in quality assurance and improvement activities including but not limited to ACO initiatives, quality standards and goals, NBHC policies, and HIPPA/OSHA standards

Required Education

• Current Massachusetts Full or Limited Dental License
• Active DEA & Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration

Other Skills & Qualifications:

• At least one (1) year practice experience
• Commitment and interest in working with multi-cultural and impoverished populations
• Excellent team building & interpersonal skills
• Experience in community and public health (preferred)

Limited License Dentist

Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to manage and provide appropriate dental care to patients of all ages

Responsible for performing general dental treatments, including, but not limited to: examinations of all types (periodic, comprehensive, limited/emergency), prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, simple extractions, limited surgical extractions, removable prosthodontics, fixed prosthodontics, single canal endodontic treatment, implant restoration, amalgam and composite and glass ionomer restorative treatments, sealants, prescription of medications, oral hygiene instructions, and counseling

Responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of dental treatment plans

Work collaboratively with the other Dental Department staff including, but not limited to dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental receptionists, dental director, sterilization staff, dental practice manager, registration supervisor, and the other dentists

Provide and facilitate patient and/or family participation in educational opportunities related to dental health status and utilize additional resources when indicated to ensure patients and/or families make informed decisions

Maintain professional behavior towards all patients, employees, and visitors to the Health Center.

Maintain accurate, legible, and timely (within 2 business days) documentation of patient encounters in the dental EMR (Dentrix)

Promptly (within 1 business day) respond to all inquiries, emails, internal messaging (Microsoft Teams, cellular text messages, etc.)

Collaborate closely with the Dental Director and Practice Manager to address problems as they arise in daily schedules as well as emergent patient care

Collaboratively coordinate dental care with employees from other NBCH departments such as PCPs, mental health providers, OBAT providers, NBCH staff, as well as external referral providers

Encourage appropriate engagement with the healthcare system in the context of any patient constraints (insurance, transportation, language, etc.)

Facilitate the timely addressing of patients' dental healthcare needs with outside resources (referrals, specialists, PT-1 transportation, etc.)

Participate in quality assurance and improvement activities including but not limited to ACO initiatives, quality standards and goals, NBHC policies, and HIPPA/OSHA standards

Attend meetings, seminars, and workshops within and outside the organization as required

Perform other duties as assigned by the Dental Director and/or Chief Medical Officer

Requirements

• Ability to effectively communicate with patients as well as other healthcare providers from diverse backgrounds
• Commitment and interest in working with low income and culturally diverse populations and in engaging patients and their families with compassion and understanding
• Must be meticulous and observant as well as able to focus when evaluating and treating patients
• Strong critical thinking skills in evaluating patients and administering appropriate treatments
• Experience in, and commitment to quality improvement
• Bilingual in Spanish or Portuguese preferred

Education

• I. Education: Dental Degree (DDS/DMD) from an approved dental school
• II. Experience: Knowledge of community health and public health principles/practices and a commitment to providing health care to individuals and families in a medically underserved community.
• III. Licensure: Eligible to obtain a Dental Intern Limited License, and willing to obtain an active DEA, and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration within one (1) year of hire.
• IV. Software/Hardware: Strong EMR skills.
