The Patient Care Technician reports to a Professional Registered Nurse and collaborates with the unit staff to provide comprehensive patient care. This role supports both direct and indirect patient care activities and follows all Northwestern Medicine policies and regulatory standards. Salary Range Hourly rate: $24.26 – $24.26. Salary placement within this range depends on experience, internal equity, and collective bargaining agreements for union positions. Responsibilities Direct Patient Care Activities Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge processes. Take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, weight for adults and/or neonates, height, blood pressure). Measure and record intake and output, including drainage output. Apply cardiac monitor/oximetry and obtain EKGs. Adhere to infant security protocol and conduct newborn hearing screening. Obtain capillary blood glucose for adults and/or neonates and perform phlebotomy. Set up fetal monitor equipment for pregnant patients and discontinue heplocks and Foley catheters. Administer enemas and collect specimens (urine, stool, blood, sputum) for adults and/or neonates. Respond to patient call lights promptly, especially emergency lights. Distribute drinking water and nourishment; prepare and assist patients with meals; feed assigned newborns. Provide scheduled morning, bed bath, and evening care according to Nursing Care Procedures; provide peri‑care where appropriate. Transport patients, equipment, and supplies during emergencies and to the front door at discharge. Assist with pre‑ and post‑operative care, positioning, and use of special safety equipment. Apply comfort and safety measures, set up oxygen and suction equipment, and apply dressings for skin breakdown. Assist with newborn nursery procedures and perform post‑mortem care when required. Monitor prosthetic devices and communication equipment. Document observations and notify RN of any change in patient condition. Follow all established policies, procedures, and standards of care. Indirect Patient Care Maintain a clean, safe environment and manage temperature logs, refrigeration, linen, and utility rooms. Perform RN‑delegated duties to support unit operations. Collect and inventory patient belongings during admission, transfer, and discharge. Record charges and complete documentation accurately. Order supplies, obtain equipment, and stock items appropriately. Check equipment functionality and count instruments/sterile trays. Stock and remove linen, set up and break down delivery tables. Participate in staff meetings, quality improvement activities, and daily/weekly/monthly QC’s. Assist in orientation of new staff and perform related duties as assigned. Use communication channels to resolve work‑related problems and demonstrate the “Patient’s First” philosophy. Complete mandatory requirements on a shift basis as delegated by the RN. Qualifications Required CNA Certification or enrollment in a nursing program with completed basic clinical rotations. CPR BLS for Healthcare Providers certification. Minimum 90% on annual mandatory Health and Safety Training quizzes. Unit‑based recognition for Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring. High school diploma; one year of college or nursing education or equivalent experience preferred. Prior healthcare experience is preferred and should demonstrate patient and team communication skills. Preferred Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.
