Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the timely and accurate accumulation, analysis, and reporting of company financial information and for providing company management with financial information in standard and requested formats. This position performs complex accounting functions under limited supervision and supports the accuracy, integrity, and completeness of financial reporting across company ledgers.

The Senior Accountant applies strong analytical judgment, interprets contractual and accounting requirements, researches and resolves complex account matters, and serves as a resource to management and operational teams. The position is also expected to coach, mentor, and support the development of Staff Accountants and Accounting Specialists. Performance is reviewed annually by the direct supervisor against company expectations and agreed-upon job-related performance goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Reporting

• Enter, review, and verify journal entries across company ledgers.
• Verify financial information and ensure its accuracy, completeness, and appropriate supporting documentation with strong attention to detail.
• Calculate management fees and amounts owed to and/or due from property owners in accordance with contractual agreements.

Account Reconciliation & Financial Analysis

• Reconcile bank and general ledger accounts and ensure reconciling items are researched and resolved timely.
• Research complex variables, make recommendations, and exercise sound judgment when executing accounting resolutions.
• Analyze financial information and identify, research, and clearly explain account variances.
• Use analytical judgment to identify accounting errors and determine corrective actions aligned with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

GAAP, Contract & Lease Interpretation

• Interpret complex lease agreements and applicable GAAP/FASB requirements when determining amounts owed to landlords and other parties.
• Apply contractual terms and accounting guidance consistently when preparing, reviewing, and resolving financial transactions and reporting matters.

Management & Operational Support

• Respond to management and operational questions regarding financial reporting and provide clear explanations of accounting results and variances.
• Support special financial analyses, reporting requests, and accounting projects as assigned by the Director or Accounting Supervisors.

Staff Development & Leadership

• Demonstrate the willingness, ability, and leadership skills to coach, mentor, and develop Staff Accountants and Accounting Specialists.
• Provide guidance on accounting procedures, problem resolution, financial analysis, and quality standards to support consistent department performance.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
• Five to seven years of progressive accounting experience.
• Established proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Experience with financial software systems, such as Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains or comparable ERP/accounting platforms.
• Excellent oral communication, formal presentation, written communication, and comprehension skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
• Three to five years of progressive accounting experience.
• Established proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and experience with financial software systems such as Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains or comparable platforms.
• Excellent oral communication, including formal presentations, written communication, and comprehension skills.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in a professional office environment. The employee may occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions while traveling to or between company locations. The noise level in the work environment may range from minimal to moderate.

Internal Contacts

This position will have regular contact with Operations Managers, Accounting Department personnel, department leaders, senior management, and other internal stakeholders regarding financial reporting, account analysis, and related accounting matters.

External Contacts

This position will have regular contact with customers, clients, property representatives, vendors, and other external business contacts as necessary to perform assigned accounting responsibilities.

Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as the selected candidate's progressive accounting experience, education, technical skills, GAAP knowledge, system proficiency, leadership capabilities, qualifications, and other job-related considerations.
