Summary

Independently develops, verifies, implements, and improves CNC programs and machining processes for production and new product introduction. Provides programming ownership for assigned parts and equipment, develops setup and tooling strategies, supports machine prove-out, resolves complex programming and machining issues, and improves quality, reliability, cycle time, and manufacturability. Performs assignments with limited supervision and provides technical guidance to CNC operators, machinists, and less-experienced programmers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  include the following with other duties as assigned:

• Independently create and maintain CNC programs for 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis vertical or horizontal machining centers, CNC lathes, routers, waterjets, and other assigned equipment based on demonstrated proficiency.
• Develop or support programming for mill-turn, multi-function, Swiss, probing, and other advanced CNC processes where applicable.
• Develop complete programming solutions including CAD/CAM geometry, machining sequence, toolpath strategy, cutting tools, holders, workholding considerations, feeds and speeds, post-processing, simulation, and setup documentation.
• Lead machine prove-out and validation of assigned programs, including safe tool motion, collision/clearance review, dimensional results, cutter compensation, probing, tool life, cycle performance, and production repeatability.
• Independently troubleshoot significant CNC programming and machining problems and implement validated program or process corrections.
• Lead toolpath optimization and programming-related cycle-time reduction while maintaining quality, safety, tool life, and process reliability.
• Review product designs and manufacturing plans for machinability and provide programming, tooling, access, datum, tolerance, and process recommendations to cross-functional teams.
• Develop and apply standardized programming practices, templates, tool libraries, machining methods, and documentation for assigned equipment or product families.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to CNC Programmer 1 personnel, CNC operators, and machinists during programming, setup, prove-out, and production support activities.
• Read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, GD&T requirements, drawing notes, bills of material, and 3D model data applicable to machined components.
• Create and maintain CNC programs from engineered CAD data using company-approved CAD/CAM software for applicable CNC equipment and processes.
• Create clear, concise setup sheets, tooling lists, work offsets, machine/program instructions, and other production documentation required for shop-floor execution.
• Select and define cutting tools, holders, attachments, fixtures, workholding, probing methods, and accessories required to support safe and repeatable machining processes.
• Update CNC programs, setup documentation, tooling information, and related NC processes for engineering changes, part revisions, tooling changes, and approved process improvements.
• Verify CNC program performance at the machine, including tool motion, workholding clearance, dimensional results, machine behavior, cycle performance, and conformance to engineering requirements.
• Support prove-out, first article, and production-readiness activities for new or revised CNC programs and machining processes.
• Troubleshoot CNC programming and machining issues involving toolpaths, post output, cutter compensation, feeds and speeds, tool life, chatter, surface finish, dimensional variation, workholding, and cycle time.
• Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, Quality, Operations, Planning, and shop-floor personnel to resolve design, manufacturability, programming, tooling, and production issues.
• Support structured root-cause and corrective-action activities for programming-related nonconformances, scrap, rework, recurring defects, or process failures.
• Support continuous improvement through cycle-time reduction, toolpath optimization, setup reduction, tooling improvements, improved process reliability, and standardization of proven programming methods.
• Maintain accurate CNC program revisions, supporting technical documentation, and applicable manufacturing information within company systems, including the applicable ERP system where required.
• Provide timely technical support to CNC operators and machinists during setup, prove-out, production, and troubleshooting activities.
• Follow established program-control, revision-control, machine-safety, quality, and configuration-management requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities. The position may instruct, coach, mentor, or provide technical direction to CNC operators, machinists, and less-experienced programmers as required for assigned work.

Requirements

Education and/or Experience

Technical degree, certificate, apprenticeship, or equivalent machining/programming experience preferred. Typically 3-5 years of directly related CNC machining and programming experience, including independent development and prove-out of multi-axis CNC programs; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and practical experience.

Proficiency with company-approved CAD/CAM programming software and strong working knowledge of G-code, post-processed NC output, cutting tools, workholding, feeds and speeds, blueprint interpretation, tolerances, and GD&T. Demonstrated experience with multiple CNC machine/control platforms and 3D CAD data is expected. Experience with 5-axis machining, mill-turn, horizontal machining, and simulation/verification software is strongly preferred.

Programming / Technical Skills

• Ability to create, edit, simulate, post-process, and troubleshoot CNC programs using company-approved CAD/CAM software appropriate to assigned equipment.
• Ability to work with 3D CAD data and perform geometry translation, model interrogation, and machining-data preparation using applicable engineering software.
• Working knowledge of common CNC machine controls and G-code conventions; familiarity with controls such as Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, Okuma, Mazak, Mitsubishi, or similar platforms is beneficial.
• Ability to apply appropriate cutting tools, holders, workholding, feeds and speeds, offsets, cutter compensation, probing, and machining practices to CNC program development.
• Ability to use machine simulation or program-verification tools when required to validate tool motion, machine travel, clearances, and collision risk.

Language Skill

• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, operating instructions, technical manuals, and procedure documents.
• Ability to write clear CNC setup instructions, technical notes, program documentation, reports, and professional correspondence.
• Ability to effectively communicate technical information one-on-one and in small-group settings with operators, machinists, programmers, engineers, supervisors, and management.
• Ability to provide accurate, direct, and constructive technical feedback to shop-floor personnel and cross-functional teams.

Mathematical Skills

• Ability to perform arithmetic using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and both English and metric units of measurement.
• Working knowledge of geometry and trigonometry applicable to CNC programming, coordinate systems, toolpaths, and machining calculations.
• Ability to convert between English and metric measurement systems and interpret dimensional tolerances.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to independently analyze CNC programming and machining problems involving multiple variables, determine root cause, evaluate alternatives, and implement safe and effective solutions.

Customer Orientation

Must demonstrate concern and take action to meet the requirements and quality expectations of internal and external customers. Must communicate professionally, meet commitments, respond promptly to production and technical needs, and use feedback to improve programming support and manufacturing performance.

Physical Demands

• Regular interaction with machine shop personnel and periodic movement throughout manufacturing areas is required.
• The employee may be required to sit for extended periods and use hands and arms for typical office, programming, and shop-floor activities.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Travel may be required for training, supplier support, equipment support, or other company-related purposes, domestically or internationally.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a combination of office and manufacturing environments and may include exposure to typical machine shop noise, operating equipment, tooling, coolant, and other normal manufacturing conditions.
