Security Officer, 3rd Shift

Provides safety, security, customer service, and emergency response services to students, faculty, staff, visitors, and campus guests through the effective use of departmental resources and proactive patrol activities. Supports the mission of the Campus Police & Security Department by protecting life and property, maintaining a safe campus environment, enforcing College policies, responding to calls for service, and assisting with emergency response operations. Position is classified as essential personnel under College policy and is subject to College and department policies regarding essential personnel. Performs essential duties related to security work as identified by management during inclement weather, emergency situations, campus closures, or as operational needs dictate. Third Shift hours: 11pm - 7am Essential Duties & Responsibilities Provides exceptional customer service and assistance while maintaining a safe and secure campus environment. Determines and takes appropriate action to resolve incidents, safety concerns, and requests for service in accordance with College policies and departmental procedures. May be required to utilize minimum levels of force consistent with training and departmental policy. Patrols campus by vehicle and foot, including academic buildings, residence halls, parking lots, athletic facilities, and other College property to identify safety and security concerns. Controls access to campus facilities and the Greenway during designated hours and assists with access control functions, including unlocking and securing facilities in accordance with College procedures. Responds to and investigates security, fire, panic, and intrusion alarm activations and takes appropriate action. Conducts routine safety and security inspections of campus facilities, including checking doors, windows, lighting, and other security-related infrastructure. Enforces parking regulations, including issuing citations, coordinating towing and vehicle immobilization, and providing traffic control during special events and campus activities. Provides vehicle assistance services, including jump starts, vehicle unlocks, and other approved assistance to students, faculty, and staff. Assists with emergency response activities, evacuations, severe weather operations, campus emergencies, and incident management procedures. Provides basic assistance during medical emergencies, including First Aid, CPR, and AED response, until relieved by emergency medical personnel. Assists with special events, athletic events, commencement activities, move-in/move-out operations, and other campus functions. Documents incidents, suspicious activity, safety concerns, and operational issues through reports, logs, and other departmental documentation. Reports safety hazards, maintenance concerns, security vulnerabilities, and other operational issues to appropriate personnel. Assists with turning campus lighting on and off for special events, athletic activities, and other approved functions. Maintains assigned equipment, vehicles, uniforms, and other departmental resources in a safe and operational condition. Performs duties related to inclement weather operations, emergency response, campus closures, and other essential personnel responsibilities as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned. Skills Needed Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion when handling difficult situations and interacting with diverse populations. Ability to observe and retain names, faces, details of occurrences, and other information necessary for report writing and investigations. Ability to maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and complete required documentation. Ability to understand and operate security systems, emergency alarm systems, radios, and other departmental equipment. Ability to interpret, apply, and explain College policies, procedures, and departmental guidelines. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing. Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies, critical incidents, and stressful situations. Ability to provide excellent customer service while maintaining safety and security responsibilities. Ability to observe legal and defensive driving practices and safely operate departmental vehicles. Key Interfaces Students, faculty, staff, visitors, parents, contractors, vendors, and campus guests. Security Supervisors, Police Officers, and other departmental personnel. Residence Life, Student Affairs, Facilities Services, Athletics, Conference & Event Services, and other campus departments. Raleigh Police Department, fire departments, EMS providers, and other emergency response agencies as needed. Individuals experiencing emergencies, conflicts, behavioral concerns, or other situations requiring security assistance. Education & Experience High School Diploma or equivalent required. Valid North Carolina Driver License with an acceptable driving record. Previous experience in security, customer service, public safety, law enforcement, military service, emergency response, or related fields preferred. CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification preferred or ability to obtain within a designated period following employment. Working Conditions & Physical Demands Must be able to work assigned shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, special events, and emergency call-back situations. Work is performed in office, vehicle, and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions. May be required to remain on duty during emergencies, inclement weather events, or campus closures when relief personnel are unavailable. Requires the ability to walk extended distances, stand for prolonged periods, climb stairs, bend, stoop, and respond to emergencies throughout campus. Requires the ability to safely operate departmental vehicles and security equipment. Ability to assist individuals experiencing medical emergencies, mobility challenges, or other safety-related concerns. May occasionally lift, carry, move, or position equipment, supplies, or materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires the ability to communicate effectively and perform the essential functions of the position in both routine and emergency situations.
