POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Procedural Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing procedures within a urology-focused Interventional Radiology program, including Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) and other procedures as the program develops.

This position provides nursing care throughout the entire procedural experience, including pre-procedure assessment and preparation, intra-procedure circulating and moderate sedation responsibilities, and post-procedure recovery and discharge.

The Procedural Registered Nurse works closely with the Interventional Radiologist and procedural team to ensure safe, efficient, patient-centered care before, during, and following interventional procedures.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

· Complete pre-procedure nursing assessments and verify patient readiness for the scheduled procedure.

· Review medical history, medications, allergies, laboratory results, imaging, and other required clinical information.

· Confirm completion of required pre-procedure testing and preparation, establish and maintain intravenous access, and administer medications as ordered and within nursing scope of practice.

· Provide patient and family education regarding the procedure, sedation, recovery, and discharge expectations.

· Identify potential clinical concerns and communicate findings to the Interventional Radiologist or other appropriate provider.

· Ensure required documentation, consent processes, and procedural safety requirements have been completed.

· Serve as the circulating Registered Nurse during Interventional Radiology procedures.

· Prepare and administer moderate sedation according to provider orders, organizational policy, nursing scope of practice, and applicable regulatory requirements.

· Continuously monitor the patient's respiratory, cardiovascular, neurologic, and overall clinical status during moderate sedation.

· Monitor and document vital signs, oxygen saturation, cardiac rhythm, level of consciousness, pain, medications, and other required procedural information.

· Recognize changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate interventions, including airway support and emergency response as needed.

· Assist the Interventional Radiologist and procedural team with medications, supplies, equipment, and other circulating responsibilities.

· Participate in procedural time-outs and required patient-safety processes and assist in maintaining the integrity of the sterile field.

· Ensure emergency medications and equipment are immediately available and operational.

· Conduct patient phone calls before and after procedures to review preparation instructions, assess readiness, answer questions, reinforce discharge instructions, evaluate recovery status, and identify concerns requiring provider follow-up.

· Provide post-procedure recovery nursing care and monitor vascular access sites, bleeding, hematoma, neurovascular status, pain, urinary symptoms, medication effects, and other potential complications.

· Monitor patients until established discharge criteria are met and manage pain, nausea, and other post-procedure symptoms according to orders and protocols.

· Provide patient and caregiver discharge education, including medications, activity restrictions, access-site care, warning signs, and follow-up instructions.

· Coordinate transfer to a higher level of care when clinically indicated and complete accurate, timely nursing documentation.

· Assist with development and implementation of nursing workflows, patient call processes, pre- and post-procedure protocols, moderate sedation standards, and patient education for the IR program.

· Maintain emergency equipment, medication supplies, procedural nursing supplies, and required crash-cart and medication checks.

· Stock, order, and maintain procedural and recovery supplies while supporting cost-effective inventory management, minimizing waste, and ensuring necessary supplies are available for patient care.

· Participate in quality-improvement and patient-safety initiatives and collaborate with physicians, procedural staff, scheduling teams, and operational leadership to promote efficient patient flow.

· Crosstrain and provide nursing support in other procedural or clinical areas as appropriate based on organizational needs and demonstrated competency.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

· Current unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the state of practice.

· Graduate of an accredited nursing program.

· Current BLS and ACLS certification required.

· Moderate sedation certification preferred; if not currently certified, must obtain within 30 days of hire.

· Procedural, perioperative, emergency, critical-care, PACU, or interventional radiology experience preferred.

· Strong assessment, communication, patient education, teamwork, and emergency-response skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to lift patients and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, adequate physical ability, including sufficient manual dexterity, to perform the requisite healthcare services, stand; walk; sit and talk or hear.
