Bus Driver

The Bus Driver will be responsible for safe, efficient, smooth, and timely transportation for students. These duties will include driving the bus in a safe, responsible manner under the direction of the Director of Transportation. Bus routes typically run in the morning, midday, and afternoon.

Essential duties and responsibilities of position:

• Arrive prior to the scheduled departure time for any required pre-trip duties.
• Operate the bus in a safe manner as described in your training to ensure student safety.
• Obey all traffic laws and signals while operating the bus and follow all county, state, and federal regulations.
• Secure the bus when you are not behind the wheel, which includes chocking the wheels when using the lift.
• Complete and submit all required reports in a timely and legible manner.
• Maintain confidentiality of all student information.
• Consistently follow the prescribed route and maintain your schedule for the loading and unloading as required.
• Do not deviate from the route unless traffic issues require it. No major deviation without knowledge, communication, and authorization from the Transportation Department.
• Maintain positive behavior of students riding the bus and provide a good example through your own behavior.
• Support school positive behavior initiatives by working with building administration and county supervisors.

Minimum requirements of the position:

• Be twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
• Have five years of driving experience with an acceptable driving record (no more than two points).
• Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B with School Bus and Passenger endorsements or acquire a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B with School Bus and Passenger endorsements prior to employment.
• Be able to pass a physical examination at the time of employment and annually prior to the beginning of the school year.
• Be able to pass all required drug and alcohol tests as required by county, state, or federal regulations.
• Be able to pass or complete all required behind the wheel and classroom instruction prior to employment.
• Be a person of good character with no criminal record of violence, child abuse or neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, substance abuse, or driving under the influence.
• Have no sexual offenses, offenses of moral turpitude, or offenses that bear directly on the individual's fitness to transport students.

Salary:

The rate of pay for a Bus Driver (6.0 hrs) for the 2026-2027 school year is $24,194 - $30,407, depending upon creditable experience and training. The number of hours per day may be increased based on the driver's bus route assignment and the school system's needs. Advanced preparation and longevity increments based on degree conferral and years of experience are in addition to the regular base salary.
