Substitute Bus Driver

The Substitute Bus Driver will be responsible for safe, efficient, smooth, and timely transportation for students. These duties will include driving the bus in a safe, responsible manner under the direction of the Director of Transportation. Bus routes typically run in the morning, midday, and afternoon.

Essential duties and responsibilities of position include arriving prior to the scheduled departure time for any required pre-trip duties, operating the bus in a safe manner, obeying all traffic laws and signals, securing the bus when you are not behind the wheel, completing and submitting all required reports in a timely and legible manner, maintaining confidentiality of all student information, consistently following the prescribed route and maintaining your schedule for the loading and unloading as required, not deviating from the route unless traffic issues require it, maintaining positive behavior of students riding the bus, and supporting schools' positive behavior initiatives by working with the building administration and county supervisors.

Minimum requirements of the position include being twenty-one (21) years of age or older, having five years of driving experience with an acceptable driving record, possessing a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B with School Bus and Passenger endorsements, passing a physical examination at the time of employment and annually prior to the beginning of the school year, passing all required drug and alcohol tests as required by county, state, or federal regulations, passing or completing all required behind-the-wheel and classroom instruction prior to employment, having good character with no criminal record of violence, child abuse or neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, substance abuse, or driving under the influence, and having no sexual offenses, offenses of moral turpitude, or offenses that bear directly on the individual's fitness to transport students.

Salary: The pay rate for a Substitute Bus Driver for the 2026-2027 school year is $19.00 per hour. This position is eligible for applicable leave benefits as required by the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act and for participation in the 403b/457b retirement savings plan.
